The '70s Come Alive In First Set Pics from Ben Affleck's 'Argo'

For the last few weeks Ben Affleck has been hurriedly assembling an eclectic cast for his next directorial effort, the historical thriller "Argo." We've watched (and reported) as Affleck has brought together a wonderful cast of actors, including Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston (in a role that forced him out of Ruben Fleischer's "Gangster Squad" and apparently "World War Z"), Kyle Chandler, Tate Donovan, Richard Kind and Michael Parks, who all appear alongside the talented director-star.

Venice '11 Review: 'Contagion' Is A Propulsive, Terrifying Picture With A Top-Notch Cast

Disaster -- an eternally popular obsession of film. Audiences have turned up in droves over the last century or so to watch mankind against their own extinction in the form of meteorites, earthquakes, alien invasions, exploding suns, planetary collisions, and whatever it was that was happening in "The Core." One of the more popular hypotheses is that when the end comes -- and it will -- it'll be not with a bang, but with a whimper. And that's what Steven Soderbergh has examined in "Contagion," his first studio film since 2007's "Ocean's Thirteen," that finds the spread of a deadly bird flu-type virus the source of man's demise.

Empire Big Screen '11 Review: Nicolas Winding Refn's 'Drive' Reminds Us Why We Love The Movies

Good god, it's been a bad year at the cinema. It's not so much that there've been a lot of awful films, although of course there have. It's more that there have been a lot of deeply average ones, and very little greatness to share around. Even the better end of the scale, it's not quite scratched the right itch for us: as good as, say, "Beginners" or "Win Win" or "Midnight in Paris" are, they don't quite get the synapses firing in the way that truly great cinema does. It's the kind of thing that the crime flick has always done well -- there's a reason that the Cahiers du Cinema crowd worshiped early American genre pictures, for example, but there's been little to be excited about even in that department. So it's lucky that Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive" has come along: it's a shot of pure cinema straight to the eyeball, and one that's stopped us from losing the faith just as we were about to start looking for gigs at What Yacht Magazine.

Yes, we know we perhaps pump up the cause of Bryan Cranston pretty hard around here, but how can you not get excited by an actor who is not only massively talented, but has also seemed to make a keen decision to do interesting projects? How can you look at a forthcoming lineup of films like this -- “Drive,” “Contagion,” “Red Tails,” “John Carter,” “Rock of Ages,” “Total Recall,” “Argo,” "World War Z" -- and not be impressed? While starring in a hit television sitcom provides a lucrative steady income (thank you syndication) as well as regular gig which for actors is a dream come true, the downside is that the lengthy schedule in which you can branch out to do plays or movies is tremendously small. And while Bryan Cranston doesn't regret the six season and 151 episodes he churned out on "Malcolm In The Middle" he used his time following the show like a man who's got about one hour left to live. He lined up "Breaking Bad," the hit and critically acclaimed AMC show that opened even more doors for the actor who hit the big screen earlier this year in "The Lincoln Lawyer" and has his CV stacked with a number of fantastic forthcoming projects including "Drive," "Contagion," "Red Tails, "John Carter," "Total Recall," "Rock Of Ages" and now, one more high profile gig.
