Review: Brandon Does David Proud, 'Antiviral' A Classic Cronenberg Freak Fest

There is no doubt that no matter what Brandon Cronenberg decided to make as his first movie, the shadow of his father would loom large. So whether it just runs in the family, or if it was a calculated decision to do something audiences would expect from the Cronenberg mantle, full credit to Brandon for taking body horror to the next level with "Antiviral." While hardly perfect, it delivers the freak fest that fans of David have been missing for the past few years while establishing Brandon as a filmmaker with a bright future.

It seems everyone wants a piece of Joseph Gordon-Levitt these days. The actor was rumored to play Batman in "Justice League," is on the ever growing list of contenders for "Guardians Of The Galaxy," is hosting the Sundance awards later this month, and now has another franchise being tossed across his very messy desk. Needless to say, dude has options.

It seems Caleb Landry Jones has taken a shine to Canadian auteurs. The actor (known to most as Banshee from "X-Men: First Class") recently teamed with Brandon Cronenberg for his uneven, but still undeniably freaky and fun "Antiviral." And now he's joined up with a three-time Cannes attendee and rising young talent Xavier Dolan for his next effort.

Having given late '80s/early '90s idol-turned-TV-hero Kiefer Sutherland a plum role in his last film, "Melancholia," ever-provocative Danish auteur Lars von Trier is looking to pull the same trick again, as Variety reports that Christian Slater is the latest unlikely addition to the director's next picture(s), his two-part drama "Nymphomaniac." Slater, mostly seen in strings of dreadful DTV actioners these days, will play the father of Charlotte Gainsbourg's lead character, joining Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell and Connie Nielsen in the picture, which documents a woman's sexual life from infancy to adulthood. The trade also reveal that British model Stacy Martin will appear, playing the younger version of Gainsbourg's character.

Between "Twilight" on the big screen, and "True Blood" and "Vampire Diaries" on the cable dial, among countless other books, graphic novels and more, if you're a fan of bloodsuckers, there's likely a flavor out there for you. And with countless other projects in the pipeline from Will Smith's directorial debut "The Redemption Of Cain" to Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive," there are still more versions of this undead character on the way. But let's just hope they are more involving and creative than Neil Jordan's "Byzantium." The director's second bite into the genre following "Interview With The Vampire" is disappointingly bloodless (figuratively) and fangless (literally).

It's been a while since Neil Jordan dipped back into the horror well. In the past decade he's tackled a glossy studio revenge movie ("The Brave One"), a mermaid tale ("Ondine"), a high-profile remake ("The Good Thief") and whatever the hell "Breakfast on Pluto" was. (He was also busy supervising the television series "The Borgias.") Well, Jordan is about to return to his roots with the vampire tale "Byzantium," set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. How about watching the first (squishy) clip?

In terms of rising stars, one actor we'll likely hear much more of over the next couple of years is Texan Caleb Landry Jones. After debuting as "Boy on Bike" in the Coen Brothers' "No Country For Old Men," Jones has gone from strength to strength, appearing in "The Social Network" (don't worry, we missed his appearance too) before scoring the role of Banshee in Matthew Vaughn's "X-Men: First Class" and moving onto Brandon Cronenberg's "Antiviral" and Neil Jordan's vampire-tale "Byzantium" -- both of which will likely premiere in North America later this year.

Everything we've seen so far of Brandon Cronenberg's "Antiviral" has promised a leaf out of his father's book and, based on early positive word from the Croisette, it looks like Cronenberg Jr. has definitely delivered. We now have a the first clip from the picture, which sees the young helmer turn up the creep levels a few notches with his lead Caleb Landry Jones, who played Banshee in Matthew Vaughn's "X-Men: First Class."
