WHen Harry Met Sally
Twenty-five years ago today on July 14, 1989, “When Harry Met Sally” went into limited release (MGM carefully platformed the film, something of a rarity for a major summer studio release even then). It became a giant hit, grossing $92 million in the U.S.—about the equivalent of double that when adjusted for inflation. Rob Reiner’s film, made from Nora Ephron’s script, and following the titular mismatched pair (Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan) who set out to explore the question of whether a man and a woman can be friends without sex and/or love getting in the way (spoiler: no), left a permanent mark on pop culture, influencing countless romantic comedies that came after. But did it also break the genre?

Transformers: Age of Extinction
Uh oh, the box office is down about 45% from last year’s July 4th weekend. The sky is falling! OK, maybe not so much, but a malaise has certainly kicked in with audiences that aren’t connecting with films in a major way. This time last year, the July 4th weekend sold $220 million worth of tickets (a 12% increase from 2012). It did so on the backs of “Despicable Me 2” and even the flop of the “Lone Ranger” (which couldn’t crack $30 million in its opening weekend). Fast forward to 2014 and it’s not looking hot in comparison at all. Why that is? Well, despite all those that actually love Michael Bay/love to hate-watch Michael Bay, “Transformers: Age of Extinction” fell a rather substantial 64% in its second week.

Begin Again
Though the music industry has undergone a sea change over the last decade, the goal for both major studios and artists remains the same: musicians want to write great songs and put them out into the world, and record labels want to make some money by helping them do it. That being said, these days, the line is sharply drawn between genuine songwriters and visionaries and corporate processed pop stars. Moreover, solo acts or groups no longer need the crumbling machine of the industry to get their work out there and recognized. The internet has more than enough avenues to turn overnight bedroom performers into the next blogosphere buzz act. A&R scouts are a dying breed. But for argument's sake, you'll need to pretend that world of major label nurturing, and the hunt for the next great thing still exists for "Begin Again."

Transformers: Age of Exctinction
“Let them hate,” Michael Bay told MTV about critics, fanboys and haters late last week. “They’re still going to see the movie.” And yep, Michael Bay was right. You may claim to hate the explosions-happy filmmaker and the “Transformers” franchise, but clearly you love to hate them enough to go see them regardless. Or someone you know does, anyhow. Michael Bay movies are akin to Dave Matthews and Nickelback: it’s impossible to find someone within a 10,000 square mile radius who will admit to liking them, but they sell millions of records. Clearly someone is buying.

It premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival under the title of “Can A Song Save Your Life?” and now, over half a year later, "Once" director John Carney’s latest will finally be hitting North American screens as “Begin Again.” Ahead of the musical romance film’s release later this week, The Weinstein Company has unloaded new TV spots, clips and featurettes to get you away from the multiplex and into the art house.

Begin Again, Keira Knightley
These days the concept of a demo tape, that you play for people and give to record executives has greatly changed. Firstly, you don't even need any kind of physical media because you can get your stuff up on any number of streaming sites. And hell, who even needs record execs when you can set a download price and hustle your record yourself, while cutting out the middle man who'll take most of your money anyway? But, you'll have pretend that getting signed is a still a pretty big deal to roll with "Begin Again."

Begin Again, Keira Knightley
A movie set against the backdrop of the music industry today seems a bit... out of place. Any artist of real worth or integrity doesn't want or need the corporate machine, with plenty of healthy indie avenues to go where their talent will be rewarded and they won't see their money disappear into a black hole of accounting. But for the sake of "Begin Again," the music industry is still a thing, and one down-and-out producer hopes to help a songwriter make it big.
