Transcendence
Disney is having a good year. Thanks to the insane success of “Frozen” and their Marvel studios wing, the studio has already crossed the $1 billion mark for 2014 and it’s not even May. Part of that success is thanks to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which spent its third week at the #1 box-office spot. Crossing the $200 million mark domestically, the film added another $26.6 million to its domestic tally (only down 36% from the previous weekend) and banked another $35.3 million overseas for $586 million total worldwide. Could it be one of Marvel's highest grossing films ever? Maybe, but it still has a ways to go to crack the top 2 ("Avengers" with 1.5 billion and "Iron Man 3" with $1.2 billion).

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Is was the battle of the sequels this weekend. With "Rio 2" arriving as the toughest competition to the behemoth that is "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," the question was whether or not the Marvel hero could off the family friendly newcomer. And it was a close battle, but Steve Rogers emerged victorious.

Captain America 2, Best/Worst
This past Friday, after opening worldwide a few weeks earlier and performing like gangbusters, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," the ninth Marvel Studios movie to date, arrived in the U.S., and swiftly proceeded to be the biggest opening of 2014 to date, smashing April records with a hefty $96 million weekend. That's a big step up for the second adventure to topline Chris Evans' super-soldier Steve Rogers to date, no doubt helped by very positive reaction from fans and critics alike.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Marvel’s hegemony continues, but it’s too be expected, right? If the mediocre “Thor: The Dark World” could open to $85 million domestically, surely the better-reviewed and mostly critically-loved “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” could best that by a significant margin, right? Well, in almost 4,000 theaters, it was only roughly $10 million (12%) more, but the ‘Captain America’ sequel broke April box-office records this weekend and grossed a whopping $10.2 million during late Thursday screenings and $30-something million on opening day. The cumulative effect rang up $96.2 million, a little shy of the breaking $100 million estimates, but still Marvel’s fourth-highest opening ever after “The Avengers,” “Iron Man 3” and “Iron Man 2,” which does seem a little low compared to ‘IM2,’ but it is April, and Chris Evans is not quite Robert Downey Jr. Still, as being criticized for the most boring of ‘Avengers’ characters, the Captain is sitting pretty this weekend.

The Avengers
Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man" seems to be done most of its major casting, but one more name has been announced. Relative unknown and "Terminator 3" actor Matt Gerard has joined the cast as the movie's villain; or one of them anyhow. The identity of that villain is currently unknown and like most Marvel movies, we assume they'll be more than one antagonist

Best To Worst: Every Marvel Movie Ranked
Even by the ambitious standards of Marvel, 2014 is going to be a big year. They've got this weekend’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (review here) and hopeful franchise-starter “Guardians of the Galaxy,” while rival studios have the forthcoming “X-Men: Days of Future Past” (at Fox) and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (at Sony). No matter who is bringing them to the screen, Marvel has become a blockbuster brand, underscored by “The Avengers” scoring the third-highest-grossing-film of all time.

There are no sure things in the movie business, and audience tastes can change at any time, but right now, Marvel is as close to a solid bet as it gets. The comic studio is simply dominating the genre by not only delivering what fans want, but staying (mostly) true to the characters, and creating a world that audiences are clearly invested in to the tune of $1.5 billion in worldwide sales for "The Avengers." And it's a not a shock that Marvel has captured the attention of the business world.
