There are a lot of interesting factors in the mix for Marvel's next sequel, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." With the shield-bearing hero being brought into sync with the post-"The Avengers" timeline, the movie is tossing together first-time tentpole directors Anthony and Joe Russo, veteran Robert Redford in a key role and Anthony Mackie flying in to help as Falcon. It's an interesting array of ingredients, but can it recreate the breezy, throwback vibe of "Captain America: The First Avenger"? Or will it be something different?

So is Steve Rogers getting all "Oldboy" on us for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"? Don't get ahead of yourself. According to directors Anthony and Joe Russo, in bringing the hero into the current timeline of the Marvel-verse, they looked back on '70s thrillers like "Three Days Of The Condor" as the vibe they were trying to bring to their first superhero and tentpole outing. But it's not just the chance to play with big budgets that brought the duo to the franchise, it was the 'Winter Soldier' story, of which both are big fans.

Disney's D23 expo -- the Mouse House's equivalent to San Diego Comic-Con -- came and went this past weekend, bringing much of the world's manchild population to Anaheim for several days of Disney-related fun. Given the studio's increasing dominance of the tentpole field thanks to their acquisition of Marvel and Lucasfilm, hopes were high that some hot news might drop, but outside of some casting for some Pixar movies, it didn't really happen.

The Marvel movies haven't exactly been great when it comes to giving exciting roles to female characters (and performers). Sure, there are usually female characters in these movies but they're almost always playing second (or third) banana. Even when noted feminist Joss Whedon made "The Avengers," he gave the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) such a reduced role you couldn't be faulted for wondering if she was one of the superheroes' girlfriend. Thankfully, there might be one (small) inroad made in the form of "Agent Carter," a Marvel short film that accompanies the Blu-ray/DVD release of "Iron Man 3," and features Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter front and center. Today comes the first images and poster (wait, there's posters for promotional short films now?), as the pre-Comic-Con nerd frenzy builds to a deafening buzz.

Comic-Con kicks off next week, and so the slurry of nerdy bits from nearly every studio will come down the pike in massive doses, but until then, here a couple of things to hold you over.

While the DC comic book universes have remained largely standalone thus far, and only the most tentative of hints dropped during the recent “Man of Steel” junket, Marvel has clicked into overdrive with the notion, tapping franchise upon franchise to have their turn. But naturally, more characters means more actors, and now two of the upcoming Phase 2 films have found a few new additions.

Like a leaky nerd faucet, Marvel keeps the information flowing, albeit in servings that would strain to be called child's size. And yet, here we are, because the Marvel-verse is one of the most interesting gambles in recent memory at the movies that is only growing bigger and more successful with each passing year (leading up to a whopper of a 2015 for Disney). But before we get ahead of ourselves and talk Phase Three, there is still lots to come with Phase Two, starting with "Iron Man 3," which opens tomorrow, and EW sat down with Kevin Feige and grilled him on all things Marvel.

As its cinematic universe continues to expand, Marvel continues to dig deeper into their well of characters. While we already have the weird “Guardians Of The Galaxy” from James Gunn to look forward to, it seems the studio is going full-on esoteric a little early for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
