26 year old British actress Carey Mulligan may want to think about getting a second home down under. The "Never Let Me Go" and "An Education" actress is already set to start filming Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" in Australia later this summer and now she's boarded another picture that will take her down to Oz.

Cannes Review: Nicolas Winding Refn's Low-Slung '80s Crime Drama 'Drive' Has A Dark Majesty

Why is "Drive" -- a seemingly trivial affair about a stuntman and part-time getaway driver, played by Ryan Gosling, pulled into deep and bloody waters on the neon-and-streetlight lit streets of L.A. -- even at Cannes, let alone in competition? It's not merely because of the bloody-but-brilliant background of director Nicolas Winding Refn, whose films (the "Pusher" trilogy, "Bronson," "Valhalla Rising") have demonstrated both an eye for composition and a taste for the jugular. It's not merely because of the film's cinematic roots, with the production seemingly crafted as a clear tribute to '80s-era Michael Mann and other synthesizer-and-faux-leather action-crime stories. Rather, you can make a case that "Drive" is here because action cinema and genre cinema are too important -- and too exciting, enthralling and, yes, artful when well made -- to be merely dismissed as suitable only for hacks to make and dolts to watch. French enthusiasm for American crime cinema from the '40s and '50s gave us the vocabulary and value set to truly appreciate film noir -- and anyone who can truly appreciate film noir will appreciate "Drive."

The anointment of Joel Edgerton as a freshly minted A-lister looks to be complete. The Australian actor seemed to be on the brink of something for a decade, but 2011 may be the year in which the stars align: his small, but pivotal role in "Animal Kingdom" last year kicked off a string of new gigs, including the male lead in the prequel/reboot/preboot of "The Thing," opposite Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the co-lead opposite Jennifer Garner in "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," and starring across from Tom Hardy in MMA drama "Warrior," a film that's picked up major buzz from early screenings, with some even whispering that it could be an awards contender.

Perhaps he was playing coy, but last week Aussie director Baz Luhrmann ("Australia," "Strictly Ballroom") was telling anyone who asked that he may not direct the adaptation of F. Scott Fizgerald‘s “The Great Gatsby.” “I gotta make a decision in three days’ time, whether to do it or not,” Luhrmann told Vulture last Wednesday.
