“We can make it. We can make it if we run,” whispers Ruth (Rooney Mara) in David Lowery’s “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” which, after a limited release on Friday, begins its expansion this week. It’s a film we loved at Sundance, and one that in its gentle subversion of the “Lovers on the Run” subgenre—as the prequel comic makes clear, the events of ‘Saints’ mostly take place after the bank robbin’, outlawin’ part of the story is done—reminded us of all the other great (and not so great) films that have pitted a pair of lovers against the law.

As we've said before, music biopics tend to take a long time to develop. Music rights, pleasing various interests, getting the right talent in place can be tricky, and getting it all lined up at the right time even more difficult, but the wheels seem to be moving on a biopic on soul music legend Sam Cooke. Those of you with a good memory will recall that back in 2011, the project was first announced with veteran British writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (the pair behind "The Commitments" and "Across The Universe") having delivered a screenplay, but not much has been heard since. Most recently plying his wares on TV shows such as Starz's “Magic City” and HBO's “The Pacific,” director Carl Franklin has decided to step back into the cinematic arena where he got his start, nine years after he directed the Denzel Washington actioner “Out of Time,” for a dose of shady business with the law.
