I once showed Brian de Palma's “Carrie” to a friend of mine who found it so frightening that by the end she had to leave with her arms draped over two other friends' shoulders. I felt quite bad, and also quite pleased that a movie could induce that kind of physical reaction in someone. Anyway, the point is that there's a remake of “Carrie” coming out on October 18th, starring the now well-established but still described as up-and-coming Chloe Grace Moretz. With the release less than a month away, here comes a slew of the usual marketing accoutrements...

Carrie
While Stephen King has made his feelings about Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" quite clear, he's yet to weigh in on a second version of "Carrie." He apparently is fine with Brain De Palma version, but is Kimberly Peirce simply treading over familiar ground or putting her stamp on it?

Carrie
This fall the unthinkable will happen: an attempt to remake Brian De Palma's horror classic "Carrie" will hit screens nationwide. While the kneejerk reaction is to recoil in, well, horror, De Palma himself isn't too concerned. "I know [director] Kimberly [Peirce], she's an old friend of mine. Basically, she called me and we talked about the ideas of what she wanted to do and I had lunch with her," the filmmaker recently told us. "But she's an extremely competent, adept director and she's got a great cast — I'm really looking forward to seeing it." We have to admit, we're curious.

retrospective: Brian De Palma
Few film directors are as polarizing as Brian De Palma, whose new film, the already argued-over "Passion," opens this week (read our review from Venice here). Hailed by some as an American visionary and a modern master of suspense, capable of gorgeously realized visual feats, De Palma is derided by others as a overtly referential hack who has based almost his entire career on a single trick: ripping off Alfred Hitchcock. But as "Un-American Psycho: Brian De Palma and the Political Invisible," the new scholarly text on the director by Chris Dumas, points out, this divisiveness is at least partially his own doing. De Palma is a director who once claimed that he wanted to be "the American Godard" and talked openly about "the revolution" on national television (fun fact: he was once shot by a cop), yet went on to create fizzy popcorn entertainments that were occasionally boycotted for their perceived misogyny (at least two of his movies spawned honest-to-god, organized revolts).

We're just over a week away from the San Diego Comic-Con, which will give grown men a free pass to wear Darth Vader costumes in broad daylight without fear of reprisal. And it also means studios are getting ready to open the floodgates on whatever material they have that might appeal to the thronging masses on the conference floor and EW is getting out in front with some stuff to show off.

While some may recoil from the very idea of making another version of "Carrie," the Stephen King story immortalized by Brian De Palma's 1976 film, if it means that it opens doors for Chloe Moretz to work with Olivier Assayas, then we're cool with that.

Hollywood’s goal of remaking every single horror film of the last forty years appears to be going strong. The latest victim is “Carrie.” Granted, the casting of Chloe Moretz as the title character and Julianne Moore as her mother sounds great on paper, especially with Kimberly Peirce ("Boys Don’t Cry") at the helm. But the first full trailer for the movie, released earlier this month, didn’t leave many people hopeful, nor did it leave much to the imagination. Now, new images from the film have arrived, once again confirming that Chloe Moretz will be drenched in blood, in case you had no idea.
