We're be decidedly un-enamored of Pixar's recent approach to their features: this year's "Cars 2" looks, if anything, worse than its predecessor, and being jammed between last year's "Toy Story 3" and 2013's "Monsters University," the studio, one of the true bastions of creativity in the industry, seems to be heading towards the sequel-happy approach of every other big company, with next year's "Brave" being the only confirmed original project on their slate (although we've got no doubt that there are plenty of other films in the works), and big name directors like Andrew Stanton and Brad Bird being wooed away to the live-action world for films like "John Carter" and "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol."

Soundtrack Includes Weezer, Robbie Williams & Brad PaisleyOK, so we know that Disney makes literally billions and billions of dollars a year off merchandise for the original "Cars," so the sequel was something of a no-brainer for them, but do they really need to sell it this hard? Apple has debuted the latest trailer for "Cars 2" on their site, which marks the 25th such entry for the film in the last year. Admittedly, most have been brief video introductions to seemingly every character glimpsed in the film, but it still seems like overkill.

Something's in the air. The days are getting longer. The weather's getting warmer. Your IQ is dropping by the day. That's right, it's the start of the summer movie season! The critical darlings that get you through the winter moments are a thing of the past, replaced by CGI-packed blockbusters, comedies and the occasional kids' flick, designed principally as a way of tempting you into an air conditioned theater to spend money on ice cream and nachos.

Another week, another batch of new posters being unveiled for Summer Blockbuster hopefuls. First up, we have a new theatrical banner for "Cars 2." The triptych image shows off the film's international setting and is full of stunning detail which you can get a better look at over at Apple. The film features Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy, ugh) heading overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. We're still not sold on the film itself but we're crossing our fingers that it could be fun. If anyone can pull it off, Pixar can.

Plus 'Puss In Boots,' If You Hate Your KidsIt's looked for a while now to be a fairly grim year for animation, but things took an uptick this past weekend with "Rango' -- a gorgeous, offbeat, surprisingly adult western which, while not a home-run, has more than enough to recommend it. Unfortunately, things look to have peaked from here on out: next up is the pedestrian-looking "Rio," and the rest of the year brings a series of sequels from the big dogs of the animation world, Pixar and DreamWorks.

While we don't get the appeal of sitting down for four hours and watching a bunch of cars drive around in a circle, apparently, a lot of other people love it so no surprise that the Daytona 500 has -- this year at least -- become a mini-Super Bowl of sorts. During yesterday's broadcast of the race, two short, new trailers for a couple of the summer's biggest sequels dropped with enough new footage in each to make them worth a moment of your time.

It's odd for us to know that a new Pixar film is only a few months away, and yet not feel any particular excitement about it, but that's the situation we find ourselves in ahead of the release of "Cars 2" The original wasn't terrible, exactly, (it still stands head and shoulders above most CGI fare from other studios), but considering the high standards that Pixar have set themselves, it was firmly at the bottom of the pack, and appears to have been greenlit principally because of the giant merchandising revenue that the property brings in to the Disney coffers (a mammoth $2 billion a year, totalling $8 billion to date, more than the total box-office revenue from Pixar's films combined).

With Pixar officially launching the marketing campaign for next summer's "Cars 2" by dropping a couple of fresh teaser trailers for the film earlier this week, the biggest question mark that was left with fans was, "Who is voicing the damn thing?" Sure, Larry The Cable Guy (god, we hate typing that) and Owen Wilson are back but aside from Michael Caine, there were a slew of voices that sounded familiar but we couldn't put a finger on it.

"Cars," the runt of the Pixar litter, is getting a sequel whether you like it or not. Frankly we're more interested in the new "Toy Story" short film that will precede the feature but we suppose there are a legion of little kids who are going to be all over a film about talking cars that drive around real fast so we suppose they'll eat this one up.
