While we were troubled by Rupert Wyatt's exit and the apparent reasons behind it -- a rushed schedule in order to make a pre-ordained release date -- 20th Century Fox seem to have been going out of their way to make us feel good about "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," the follow-up to the surprisingly excellent 2011 blockbuster "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." First they had a script draft by "Side Effects" scribe Scott Z. Burns, then replaced Wyatt with "Let Me In," director Matt Reeves. Then Reeves cast his film up, and alongside the returning Andy Serkis, landed Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

NYFF Review: 'Casting By' A Wonderfully Entertaining Doc Shining A Light On The Art of Casting

In the early days, actors signed multi-film contracts and became “studio players.” This meant that they were wedded to each production company, assigned to a number of different films each year playing a role probably familiar to their last. Actors were cogs in a machine, and it was rare that someone worked their way up from small-time character actor to full-blown star. If you looked like a Leading Man, you became a Leading Man, or you were soon out of the business. There’s a whole generation of filmgoers that don’t understand that non-traditional casting is a relatively contemporary invention, and for them, the documentary “Casting By” should prove to be tremendously enlightening.

Given that the first film managed to land heavyweights like Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones and Donald Sutherland, not to mention Oscar-nominated lead Jennifer Lawrence, it's always been clear that "The Hunger Games" franchise wasn't going to have much trouble attracting serious talent. But the enormous success of the first film earlier this year (as well as, crucially, the mostly positive reviews) means that they've been able to step up their game for the sequel, "Catching Fire." Philip Seymour Hoffman has been the biggest name addition, as new gamesmaker Plutarch Heavensbee, but with the film going before cameras, Lionsgate and director Francis Lawrence have found some time to add another acclaimed actor to the cast.

Last year was like a big coming out party for Elle Fanning. The actress gave impressive performances in films as disparate as J.J. Abrams’s “Super 8,” Cameron Crowe's "We Bought A Zoo" and Francis Ford Coppola's "Twixt," with all of these following her breakout turn in Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” the year before. So it’s no wonder that her profile is continuing to rise, and Deadline reports that Fanning will star in the young adult novel adaptation “Olive’s Ocean.”

It sounded, for a few weeks, as if Keira Knightley was done with the blockbusters. The actress, and star of the giant "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, told Empire Magazine this month "It comes to a point where you think, 'What kind of film can I make that will allow me to live a proper life?' And those tent-pole movies make it difficult... I became aware of how much I was complaining about it and you can't complain about the attention you're getting while still doing the films that invite the most attention. I do actually love blockbusters but that decision has a lot that comes with it that I'm not prepared to go with.”

Music video director Anthony Mandler will be making his feature film debut, one way or another. The helmer, who has worked with folks like Rihanna, Drake, Usher, Jay-Z, The Killers, John Legend, T.I., One Republic and Muse has already lined up two movie gigs: "Die In A Gunfight" with Zac Efron attached, and the comic book adaptation "Last Days Of American Crime." However, a third movie may be beating them both to the big screen.

Yes, we're still incredulous that after the many tall tales, fabrications and fishing stories that come out of the mouth of Mark Millar, "Kick-Ass 2" is actually happening. And while the premise finds it subverting the standard tropes of the superhero genre, it does fall in line with one key requirement of a sequel: there's going to be more people in it.

Oh hey, Ryan Reynolds...there's a name we haven't heard in a while. Dude has been keeping his head way down since last year's flop "Green Lantern," shooting next summer's blockbuster hopeful "R.I.P.D.," lending his voice to two animated films ("Turbo" and "The Croods"), hanging out with Blake Lively, and watching "Safe House" open earlier this year to some pretty decent numbers. But now he's going to be heading back home to Canada to take on a movie by one of the nations's most well-known filmmakers.

Opera legend Maria Callas has been a talent many have sought to bring to the big screen, with a couple of biopics brewing in the past few years including one by Niki Caro that needs script work and has Eva Green on board, and another with Eva Mendes attached to star. However, before either of those projects come to fruition, it looks like Callas will first be played by Paz Vega in Olivier Dahan's "Grace Of Monaco" starring Nicole Kidman as "Rear Window" actress turned Monaco princess, Grace Kelly.

Bill Murray doesn’t go to work for just anyone. As he advances in years he’s been more and more picky with the roles he chooses, and the only films you can pretty much guarantee that he’ll appear in are those that have Wes Anderson seated in the director’s chair. However, he does currently have two interesting non-Anderson projects on the horizon. The first is “Hyde Park on Hudson” in which he’ll play the 32nd President FDR alongside Laura Linney and Olivia Williams. The second is frequent Anderson collaborator Roman Coppola’s “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” with Jason Schwartzman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and, of course, Charlie Sheen.
