Catherine Hardwicke
Catherine Hardwicke is insane. This isn't a dig. It's a fact. Like the sky is blue and water is wet. The director of "Thirteen" and the first "Twilight" has a delightfully off-kilter aura that is positively infectious. After helping to create that blockbuster franchise (and, honestly, what would those movies be without her casting?), she directed a big studio movie for Warner Bros. ("Red Riding Hood") before going back to what she does best: dramatize the lives of young people on the edge. The result? "Plush," which after a brief theatrical run is out on DVD this week.

The first five minutes of "Plush," the new musical murder mystery from Catherine Hardwicke (who started the "Twilight" franchise with a bang, before getting shoved to the side for a succession of anonymous filmmakers), are misleading in a pretty profound way. In this introductory sequence, an unseen figure ties a young woman to a chair. She is gagged and helpless, although her positioning and the slick vinyl restraints suggest something even kinkier. The shadowy figure dumps a whole truckload of rocks on top of her while she's bound, suffocating her under the stones. Bright lights illuminate the ghastly tableau. This is like something out of a "Saw" sequel, especially since nothing even remotely spooky happens for the next 45 minutes. Torture porn, it's not.

After kicking off the "Twilight" franchise and promptly being replaced by an array of different (and, it should be noted, male) directors, director Catherine Hardwicke has been somewhat adrift. She did a decidedly "Twilight"-ish take on "Red Riding Hood" for Warner Bros. before the fairy tale craze really bloomed, and just completed a contemporary thriller called "Plush" that she co-wrote. But now she's headed back to the bestseller list, with an adaptation of Karen Thompson Walker's buzzy debut novel "The Age of Miracles" for River Road Entertainment. The adaptation was written by "Hanna" scribe Seth Lochhead and will be produced by River Road's founder Bill Pohlad.

It was just a couple of weeks ago when director Catherine Hardwicke hinted at her next movie saying, “I have another project that looks like it’s going to go first. It’s in Sweden and Germany, and it’s really wild. I can’t quite talk about it, but we’ll probably do the announcement in a couple of weeks." Well, right on schedule, that news has arrived.

After impressing early in her career with "Thirteen" and "Lords Of Dogtown," Catherine Hardwicke hasn't exactly lived up to her promise in recent times, getting behind the first installment of the 'Twilight' franchise and delivering the tepid "Red Riding Hood" earlier this year.

For a moment there, we thought we lost director Catherine Hardwicke to the tentpole world. She made a smash success out of vampire/human romance with "Twilight," teamed up with Warner Bros. for the egregious "Red Riding Hood" (which this writer already places on the Worst Of The Year list) and late last year, she signed on for another tween blockbuster, "The Maze Runner." But it looks like she's ready to get her hands dirty again.

Catherine Hardwicke, for better or worse, has largely defined what we have experienced, cinematically, for the past couple of years. Her influence might get lost in the shuffle, since every subsequent film has been helmed by a different director, but with the look and feel of the first "Twilight"' movie, she set the stage for a whole bunch of copycats and wannabes, which makes it all the more startling that she's returning to remarkably similar (hallowed) ground, with a revisionist take on "Red Riding Hood."

We're beginning to lose faith in you Catherine Hardwicke. You came on the scene with a one-two punch with "Thirteen" and "Lords of Dogtown," took a paycheck gig directing "Twilight" and yes, we understand that your musical "Hamlet" with Emile Hirsch didn't come together, but surely you can do more than retreat to another tween tentpole? Anyway, the latest trailer for "Red Riding Hood" has arrived and it will speak to the 13-year-old girl inside of you.

There's nothing quite like momentum. You struggle for years, working miserable day jobs and writing desperately at night to no avail, but as soon as you land your first gig, you've suddenly got more offers than you know what to do with. Fast-rising screenwriter Noah Oppenheim didn't quite have the same experience as most scribes, parking cars and waiting tables -- he spent years working in TV, as a Senior Producer on both NBC's "Today" show, and "Hardball" on CNBC, as well as co-creating "Mad Money" with Jim Cramer, for which someone should probably give him a slap.

She got the "Twilight" franchise off and running and has retold a familiar fairy tale in "Red Riding Hood" hitting theaters next spring and now, Catherine Hardwicke has her eyes set on another major franchise project.
