"Rock of Ages" will make you want to raise your arms...and then immediately plunge your fingers into your eyeballs for salvation (you can go back for seconds to rescue your ears). "Hairspray" helmer Adam Shankman directs this movie that will finally kill the '80s nostalgia that continues to plague us if we're lucky and will further root karaoke performances and bar jukeboxes in that hairspray-choked decade if we're not. We've had a sub-par version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" stuck in our head since we saw it, and we wouldn't wish this fate on anyone, except perhaps the development heads at Warner Bros. As much as everyone keeps trying to make Julianne Hough a star, Steve Perry she is not (though admittedly she is cuter).

If you still have Def Leppard’s Pyromania album on heavy rotation and prefer Jefferson Starship to Jefferson Airplane, then there’s a pretty good chance you’re excited for the upcoming musical adaptation, “Rock Of Ages.” An ode to the days of hair metal and tight leather pants, “Hairspray” helmer Adam Shankman has cooked up a tale of a small town girl (livin’ in a lonely world) and a city boy who fall for one another on the Sunset Strip, all while in pursuit of their Hollywood dreams. Some of us here at The Playlist have secretly been anticipating the film’s June release, and with a cast consisting of Russell Brand, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Malin Akerman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary J. Blige, Bryan Cranston, Will Forte, and of course Tom Cruise doing his best Tim Cappelo interpretation, who can blame us?

2010's "Red" was, on paper, one of the least likely sleeper hits of the last few years: an actioner where the average age of the cast was over 60 (and that was even allowing for relative younglings Karl Urban and Mary-Louise Parker). And yet the film, based on Warren Ellis' comic book, directed by Robert Schwentke and starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren, took a very solid $200 million worldwide on a budget that didn't break the bank, and Summit have been moving ahead with a sequel ever since.

Love or fame? That's the big question a mustaciohed Paul Giamatti poses to newcomer Diego Boneta in "Rock Of Ages," Adam Shankman's big hairspray filled '80s musical. And based on that sentence, you should already know if your down with this movie or not, without having to watch the trailer.

You don't need to see many movies to understand that in Hollywood, once a woman hits forty, she suddenly lacks relevance. She's not sexy, she's not assertive, and if she doesn't have a man, there must be something wrong with her. Just recently, Twitter users collapsed under a Super Bowl-related avalanche of anti-Madonna tweets. As she played the halftime show, many wanted to discuss the abnormality of her body, and her biceps -- she was being punished for actively trying to stay relevant at an advanced age. We should all be so lucky.

Well, that was quick. Just one week after announcing it had signed on with Open Road, the distributors of the film, to co-finance Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller, “Side Effects,” Megan Ellison’s Annapurna pictures has backed out of the project (however, Open Road is staying put to distribute the film). But it's not all gloom and doom for "Side Effects," though, as Soderbergh's "Traffic" co-star Catherine Zeta-Jones has just signed onto the project (via Deadline).

It's hard to believe, but by the time 2012 rolls it will have been five years since we've seen Catherine Zeta-Jones on the big screen. You have to go back to 2007's middling double whammy of "No Reservations" and "Death Defying Acts" but since then -- and not counting the 2009 comedy "The Rebound" which is stuck in some kind of terminal sales/distributor limbo -- she's been laying low (taking care of her husband, cancer survivor Michael Douglas, and generally being there for her family). But 2011 has seen her quickly ramp up with a trio of projects. She's a got a role in the big '80s musical "Rock of Ages," she's dabbling in comedy with "Playing the Field" with Gerard Butler and she's got a part in Stephen Frears’ gambling pic “Lay the Favorite.” Well, she's adding another movie to her busy dance card.

The Weinstein Company may have another Oscar darling on their hands. A year after grabbing $400 million worldwide and scads of major awards for “The King’s Speech,” The Brothers W paid $7 million for the domestic rights (via Deadline) to another film about British aristocracy, nabbing “The Iron Lady” starring Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. Producers only showed five minutes of the film before the bidding started between the Weinsteins, Summit and Relativity, though all someone had to say was “Streep as Thatcher” to ensure this would be a major purchase and, as planned by TWC, a high profile late ‘11 release. Expect it to be a big dog in the awards race.

It has been a long, long time since we've seen Catherine Zeta-Jones on the big screen. Ok, she did make the rom-com "The Rebound" with Justin Bartha a few years back but that film is still trying to find a buyer, but a big role in the upcoming "Rock of Ages" might get fresh interest in that title which is currently sitting on a shelf.
