The Immigrant
“I thought there was something very beautiful about exploring a melodrama from a female protagonist's perspective because all of a sudden I would be free from the constraints of, what I would call, macho posturing, male behavior and get straight to the emotional heart of it,” director James Gray said last fall of his upcoming drama “The Immigrant,” which stars Marion Cotillard.

If you needed any confirmation of Hugh Jackman's range of interests, all you have to do is look at the last three films that have all arrived in less than a year: the musical "Les Miserables," the comic tentpole "The Wolverine" and this fall's hit thriller "Prisoners." So of course, it's only natural the new talk around the actor revolves around another musical, and mysterious sci-fi comedy.

Grossing less than $100 million in the U.S., Neil Blomkamp's "Elysium" wasn't the tentpole success Sony or the filmmakers had hoped it would be. But grossing $250 million worldwide, the film (which cost $115 million) wasn't a total wash, and regardless, Blomkamp remains unbowed. His next picture, the sci-fi comedy "Chappie" is getting underway and it appears as if casting is almost finished.

Neill Blomkamp,
Neill Blomkamp, the South African director who came to prominence in 2009 with “District 9,” has only just released his new film “Elysium,” but already he's talking up his next one. The folks over at the LA Times have put together various interviews and press releases to give us an idea of what the project, “Chappie,” will be like: and that idea is, basically, " 'RoboCop' but hilarious." Tell us more...

Neill Blomkamp District 9
Most directors would kill to have the kind of support (personally backed by Peter Jackson) and success ($210 million worldwide, Best Picture nomination) Neill Blomkamp did on this feature debut, "District 9." And some filmmakers might have felt pressured to keep Hollywood in their favor, and undoubtedly, Blomkamp has been asked numerous times since 2009 about making a sequel, "District 10." But he's largely deflected the question, and been reticent about the enterprise, telling us in 2012, "I'm not sure I'm making that film. It would be cool, but these films take two or three years to make, and the investments are so extreme, you can't accurately predict where you'll be a few years from now, I believe. If you're not creatively invested in it, you're making a mistake, and that creative investment happens day to day. So I don't know when that feeling for a 'District Whatever' film happens." But it seems he's at least drafted an idea.

As the curtain is being lifted on Neill Blomkamp's forthcoming summer sci-fi "Elysium," another is being lowered over his next effort, "Chappie." Story details on the film are under lock and key, but the cast is already grabbing attention with South African rap duo Die Antwoord slated as the leads in the film, with Blomkamp buddy Sharlto Copley also coming on board. The movie will cost $50 million but aside that morsel, not much else is known about the sci-fi comedy and Blomkamp ain't talking.

While it will wind up being a four year wait between “District 9” and “Elysium” when the latter picture drops this summer, Neill Blomkamp has not wasted much time prepping for his next film, the sci-fi comedy “Chappie.” And while the recent news of South African rap duo Die Antwoord being cast as the leads in the film was certainly a surprise, this particular piece of news should come as no shock to anyone.
