It's funny how the complaints subside if a Kickstarter project is taken on by someone you like. For example: last summer screenwriter/director Charlie Kaufman and former "Community" writer/producer Dan Harmon (two pretty successful guys in their own right) hit the crowdfunding site looking for backers to help get the stop-motion animated "Anomalisa" off the ground. And they certainly didn't face Zach Braff-ian levels of discontent and went on to quietly double their $200,000 goal. And with some cash already in hand, they're headed to Cannes hoping that the movie industry will now front the rest.

While the name HBO has become synonymous with quality television, the last few years have seen rival network FX catch up in a big way. The network might only be on basic cable, and it might air the terrible Charlie Sheen vehicle "Anger Management," but in "Justified," "Archer" and "The Americans," it has three of the best TV shows airing anywhere right now, and has also been home to near-classics like "The Shield," 'Terriers," and the still-ongoing trio of "Louie," "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia," and "Wilfred."

Charlie Kaufman might be having some issues getting his next directorial effort, "Frank Or Francis," up and running, but he's not exactly lacking for work. The writer of "Adaptation" and "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" is adapting young-adult novel "The Knife Of Letting Go" for Lionsgate, and he's developing an HBO series starring Catherine Keener. And now, he's moving into new territory with some very, very interesting collaborators.

The film blogosphere loves screenwriter/director Charlie Kaufman, and with good reason. His mindbending screenplays and films ("Synecdoche, New York," "Adaptation," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") are surreal, challenging, hilariously bizarre, profound and moving, so he is beloved by many cinephiles who value something other than the cookie-cutter norm. Consequently, when quotes from actress Elizabeth Banks started spreading today about the viability and potential death of Kaufman's next project "Frank Or Francis" -- an ambitious satire of Hollywood set to music, where a film director feuds with a blogger -- people understandably got worried.

Charlie Kaufman's been a very busy bee recently. It's almost exactly four years since "Synecdoche, New York" premiered at Cannes, and for a long time, there was little-to-no news as to what the writer-director, who made his name penning the screenplays for "Being John Malkovich," "Adaptation" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," was up to. But the news that he'd done a polish on the script for "Kung Fu Panda 2" (which ultimately showed little evidence of the Kaufman touch) kicked off a run of activity.

Lionsgate are making sure they aren't caught with their pants down when "The Hunger Games" series inevitably comes to an end. Even though the first film is still in theaters, they aren't wasting any time in making sure they have another big hit franchise to keep the blockbuster money train going once "Mockingjay" brings the adventures of Katniss to a close. And the answer to Suzanne Collins seems to be Patrick Ness, and Lionsgate are hoping his "Chaos Walking" series of books can work the same magic. In order to attract the best talent possible to the material, they're picked a pretty brilliant screenwriter to get the ball rolling.

It has been three, far too long years since Spike Jonze's last feature film, the wonderful "Where The Wild Things Are" and while various videos and shorts he's done in the interim -- including "I'm Here" and "Scenes From The Suburbs" -- were nice holdovers, we're glad that his next movie, penned by Charlie Kaufman, appears to be taking shape. First announced over a year ago, Megan Ellison and her Annapurna shingle got things rolling by backing the project and over 2011 Joaquin Phoenix and Carey Mulligan came aboard. Now, two more great actresses appear to be boarding the film.

When a screenwriter is admired, it is often based on how well he or she can construct a story (Robert Towne, William Goldman) or write dialogue (Aaron Sorkin, David Mamet), but Charlie Kaufman is the rare screenwriter who is revered for the strength of his ideas. He certainly feels like the first writing auteur, and it’s appropriate that he began directing his own scripts with 2008’s "Synecdoche, New York" (That’s not to disparage the great films Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry made out of Kaufman scripts, although as far as “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” goes, the less said, the better. Director George Clooney and Kaufman infamously butted heads over that film.)

Carey Mulligan Joins Coens' 'Inside Llewyn Davis' & Spike Jonze's New Film Starring Joaquin Phoenix

It's hard to believe that just two years ago the world was waking up to Carey Mulligan. The actress seemed to come out of nowhere with her turn in Lone Scherfig's "An Education," and rather than try and go for big paydays in tentpole or franchise movies, Mulligan has wisely opted to work with filmmakers instead. Jim Sheridan ("Brothers"), Oliver Stone ("Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps"), Mark Romanek ("Never Let Me Go"), Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive") and Steve McQueen ("Shame") now grace her filmography, with Baz Luhrmann being added this fall as she shoots "The Great Gatsby." And Mulligan isn't stopping there, as Variety report, she's adding two more helmers to the list.
