Where does using your sexuality to make money end and pornography begin? Can a young woman make it in the adult film industry and come out unscathed, and are the sacrifices in your personal life worth it for the potential wealth and fast track to a better social status? Those are some of the questions asked in "About Cherry," an indie film that takes viewers into the world of the triple-x-rated scene.

When making a film about a seedier career path – for instance, stripping in Steven Soderbergh’s excellent summer fling “Magic Mike” – it’s important to approach the topic with a delicate and nuanced touch. Our writer on the scene at Berlinale 2012 didn’t exactly find that to be the case with porn career flick “About Cherry,” writing it off as a film that “tries hard to provoke us into reassessing the porn industry, but is so ham-fisted that the result is not a look on the bright side, but a whitewash.”

The game plan of most indie filmmakers is to get their film in a festival and acquire distribution and it looks like the things have worked out well for young filmmakers Stephen Elliott and Jon Kasdan (son of Lawrence) on their latest efforts behind the camera.

That the film is co-written from the sympathetic point of view of porn actress Lorelei Lee (who also takes a small cameo role) couldn’t be clearer in co-writer/director Stephen Elliott’s debut feature “Cherry.” Ostensibly a fairly familiar tale of a good girl getting slowly pulled into the seamy world of pornography, its unusual tack (that this is, in fact, a good thing) may sound intriguing but it gets wearing pronto; some decent performances cannot clear the air of the musky odor of porn apologism. The industry depicted here is one of clean surfaces, make up room camaraderie, and a startling lack of seediness, and Cherry/Angelina’s choice to join it is presented as an empowered, sensible decision.

Among the many academic pursuits, art installations and meta-projects James Franco undertakes at any given moment, it might shock you to know that he also makes movies. You may have forgotten he was in last summer's smash hit "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" or that his latest directorial effort "The Broken Tower" hit VOD last month. Well, "Cherry," the latest movie starring the busy thesp, is headed to Berlin and some first images have arrived.

Guessing James Franco's next step is an entirely foolhardy pastime. The absurdly busy polymath star jumps from project to project seemingly at random, with recent movements including playing a guy who chops his own arm off, a blockbuster about super-intelligent monkeys, a stint on a soap opera, making his directorial debut, teaching a college class about himself, a collection of short stories, a Julia Roberts vehicle adapting a self-help book, a stoner comedy parody of 1980s fantasy movies, a mega-budgeted Disney prequel to "The Wizard of Oz," and fucking up the Oscars.
