Cinco De Mayo movies
Bring out the Cuervo, it’s Cinco de Mayo! Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day and, although Mexican public schools are closed for the day (isn’t that the real definition of a holiday?), it is celebrated more, ahem, seriously, in the United States than Mexico. So you know, the Mexicans beat the French at the Battle of Puebla and Mexican ex-pats living in Civil War-era California turned it into a holiday. Fun fact, the Battle of Puebla also marks the last time a European force invaded anywhere in the Americas (we’re talking proper military invasions – not U-boats off of Maine’s seacoast during WW2 or the 1960’s British Invasion).

Chevy Chase, the guy who basically torpedoed his role on "Community," seems to be changing his mind about popping up in reboot of the franchise that helped make his name. The upcoming "Vacation" has been brewing for a while now, but back in 2011 he made it clear he wasn't interested in playing second fiddle any series he helped start. And in fact, he was writing his own sequel script.

How do you let a piece of unsavory news fly as far under the radar as possible? Announce it late in the afternoon the day before a major holiday. It's hardly a surprise at this point, given how much he's trashed the show, but Chevy Chase is officially leaving "Community." Bet you didn't see that coming.

Oh Chevy Chase, you lovable asshole you. After coming to blows with Dan Harmon during the third season of “Community,” Chase is still around and Harmon isn’t – but before all that came to a head Chase gave an interview to the Huffington Post UK in February to promote the UK DVD release of the second season. It's being printed now as the show hits shelves and once again, his distaste for the comedy comes through loud and clear. During the course of the interview he says that deciding to do "Community" in the first place was “a big mistake.”

Chevy Chase Says 'Community' Could Be "Funnier" & Needs More Of His Kind Of Comedy

So NBC is right now deciding which shows they'll be bringing back next season, with the current word around town being (sadly) that returning comedies like "30 Rock" and "Parks & Recreation" will get short orders, meaning essentially half-season renewals. Bummer. The strategy there is that it will allow the network to pick up more shows in what sounds like a scheduling/marketing nightmare, but good luck to them on that. Anyway, one show that fans are also hoping will get the greenlight is "Community," whose fervent fanbase hasn't as yet converted into big time ratings. And if you ask Chevy Chase, the show could be funnier.

And it was all going so well for "Community." NBC's innovative, genre-hopping sitcom had gone through its darkest time after being yanked off the schedule late last year, and many wondered if the low-rated show with a cult following was headed to the chopping block. But in fact, being taken off the air might have been the best thing to happen to it: it energized the fans, and when the show returned just over two weeks ago, it was to its best ratings in over a year. Even this week, when hugely popular timeslot nemesis "Big Bang Theory" returned with new episodes, "Community" held strong, and was the NBC's biggest show of the night. Given that a fourth season of the show would see it move closer to the crucial number of episodes for syndication, it all looks but certain that the gang will back next fall.

Dan Aykroyd may be mostly busy these days talking up a “Ghostbusters” sequel that seems unlikely to ever happen (and do we even want it to without the involvement of the great Bill Murray?), while Chevy Chase is part of television’s best comedy ensemble on NBC’s “Community.” Their respective stars may not be as high as they once were, and likely never will be again, but let’s not forget how talented these two men have shown themselves to be, so it’s with a degree of excitement that we welcome news that the pair are planning to re-team for a new comedy.

It's generally agreed that television is as good as it's ever been. Of course, there's a lot of rubbish on, as there always was, but virtually every night, year round, brings more quality comedy and drama than you could possibly hope to watch. The next few weeks alone bring the return of "Mad Men" and "Game of Thrones," two of the most acclaimed cable dramas of recent years, while "Justified" and "Luck," muscular, cinematic long-form tales as strong as anything the big screen has seen recently, wrap up their seasons, and other favorites like "Breaking Bad," "Louie" and "Homeland" will be back before the year is out, along, we hope, with a raft of excellent new shows.

Chevy Chase Says He's Writing His Own 'Vacation' Movie, Isn't Interested In Mentoring Young 'Fletch'

From somewhere in the late-'90s until about now, Chevy Chase had fallen off the map. There was a time when no comedy star was brighter than Chase, but his reputation for being difficult to work with and a string of bad pay-day movies found the comic icon struggling, until his new gig on "Community" revitalized his career. Seemingly back in the public consciousness, now would be a good time for Chase to become cooperative and boost his profile by helping along the "Vacation" and "Fletch" reboots that are in various stages of development. But it seems some old habits die hard.
