Child 44 Gary Oldman Tom Hardy
Reader reports, audience reviews… meh. Sure you can keep tabs on that “coverage,” but posting about that stuff specifically can be hurtful or irresponsible to a film if the “reviews” are early and especially if they’re negative (hell, on the Internet they’re pretty easy to fabricate in either direction too). Finding out “early buzz” on a movie through test screenings isn’t hard if you’re looking for it. So that said, we’d been hearing a few whispers about “Child 44” and perhaps today’s news jibes with it.

Child 44 Gary Oldman Tom Hardy
It's "very much a character drama, also some kind of reverse love story between my character and Tom's character: they've been married for eight years when the movie starts and it's like a cold war between them," Noomi Rapace recently told us about her upcoming "Child 44." And it certainly seems like there is no love lost either between her co-stars Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman.

These last few years have been a wild ride for Noomi Rapace, but sitting down to talk with her at the Marrakech Film Festival this week, we found her refreshingly down to earth, giving the impression of someone who is fully aware of the lucky hand she’s been dealt and is not afraid to work hard to stay so lucky. Of course it was the Swedish version of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” trilogy that originally saw Rapace break out internationally, and since then one of the things that has characterized her career has been her tendency to work again with people she has collaborated with before. So over the brief span of four years she did “Dead Man Down” for ‘Dragon Tattoo’ director Niels Arden Oplev, has two projects with Tom Hardy in the can, two with Mathias Schoenaerts and hopes to reteam with Ridley Scott for the mooted “Prometheus 2.”

Across his career, Vincent Cassel has logged time with Darren Aronofsky, Danny Boyle, Steven Soderbergh, David Cronenberg, Gaspar Noé and more, earning no shortage of acclaim along the way. So it's not a surprise that should a spot open up in an upcoming movie, his name is going to be bandied about. But it is a surprise to see him to take over two movies in one week.

Though he’s likely now mostly recognized for playing opposite Jessica Chastain in two different Annapurna productions -- “Lawless” and “Zero Dark Thirty” -- Jason Clarke had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it role in Michael Mann’s maligned digital period-piece “Public Enemies.” Now, as reported by THR, Clarke is in talks to don period garb once again with one of his “Lawless” co-stars.

So, just how kick ass is Philip Seymour Hoffman? Just a few weeks ago he was making headlines for checking himself back into rehab after a relapse into drug addiction led to him to snorting heroin. And today, dude is back at work like a boss and helping make an already great sounding project even better.

As the red carpets are rolled up and the screening rooms shut for another year, a final few nuggets of casting news reach us from Cannes. First, via The Wrap, is some news on “Rosewater,” the film Jon Stewart is taking 12 weeks off "The Daily Show" this summer to shoot (don’t panic, John Oliver will be hosting in his absence). Despite Stewart’s comedic day job, "Rosewater" is a drama, based on a true story about Maziar Bahari, a journalist who was detained in Iran while covering the 2009 elections there.

Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman are beginning to be old pals. The actors have teamed together on a string of strong films, with "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Lawless" under their under their belt, and it's probably safe to say they're getting along quite well. Because again they're going to be paired up in a film with a cast that just keeps getting strong and stronger.

With news of a big screen "Entourage" movie and that "Annie" remake, it might be easy to get cynical and disheartened about Hollywood. But as a recent movie has taught us, there's always a shot at a silver lining, and today it comes in the form of Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace. The pair have already signed up to star in the Dennis Lehane adaptation "Animal Rescue," and at the time they were also considering the Cold War era flick "Child 44." Well it looks like the allure of working together and the material were too good to resist, because what the hell, they're going to do that movie too.
