We're not sure if James Franco keeps a diary but if he does, 2013 likely takes up several volumes. Tackling everything from the major studio comedies to left field documentaries to hard scrabble indie flicks, working as a writer, director, actor, producer and more (sometimes all at once), James Franco is nothing if not prolific and creatively curious. One film he managed to get on the festival circuit last year was his Cormac McCarthy adaptation "Child Of God," and while it still needs distributor, a new trailer for the project has dropped.

James Franco might not be the first person to debut a film he'd directed at each of the three major European festivals in the same year (Ulrich Seidl recently managed the feat with his 'Paradise' trilogy, albeit not in the same calendar year). But it's an undoubtedly impressive run, especially given that Franco has spent the same period of time starring in two legitimate blockbusters in the shape of "Oz The Great And Powerful" and "This Is The End," as well as working on his umpteen other projects of various shapes and sizes.

Back in the spring, James Franco hit Cannes with "As I Lay Dying," an experimental drama and adaptation of William Faulkner's book that utilized all kinds of split-screen to surprisingly decent effect, even if the movie as a whole didn't amount to much more than a curiosity. Whether that latter charge will be true or not on his forthcoming "Child Of God" remains to be seen, but we now have a very brief taste.

Saoirse Ronan, How I Live Now
As if the 2013 lineup for the Toronto International Film Festival could not get any more stacked and outstanding, here comes another batch of titles that are sure to send the schedules of those attending into what will likely be a ridiculous slate of back-to-back-to-back-to-back movie days. But who's complaining?

After a weighty first announcement for this year's TIFF earlier in the week, eyes turned across the Atlantic this morning to the reveal of the line-up for the 70th Venice Film Festival, which precedes Toronto by about a week. We already knew the festival was opening with Alfonso Cuaron's hotly-anticipated 3D space adventure "Gravity," and an educated guess at the line-up could be made from looking at which films among the TIFF announcement weren't world premieres, but the official roster was revealed at a press conference in Rome this morning, and it's once more, a doozy.

As you know, James Franco is currently in the midst of shooting "Child of God," an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's grim novel about about a violent man living on the edges of society, and dabbling in all kinds of unsavory activities (necrophilia, pedophilia among them). And while at any given moment Franco has about fifteen hundred things going on, you don't have to worry that this one might be neglected, because it seems it's going to make its debut sooner than we thought.

If you recall, during TIFF James Franco revealed, that his plans for a Scott Rudin-produced adapatation of "Blood Meridian" were on hold (more on that in a second). He had shot some test footage at the end of 2010 for the film with Mark Pellegrino, Scott Glenn, Dave Franco and Luke Perry but it appears that's about as far is got. However, the multi-tasking thesp was still intent to adapt something by Cormac McCarthy and said he planned to make a film out of "Child Of God." Who knew less than six months later that it would be happening.
