Disney's D23 expo -- the Mouse House's equivalent to San Diego Comic-Con -- came and went this past weekend, bringing much of the world's manchild population to Anaheim for several days of Disney-related fun. Given the studio's increasing dominance of the tentpole field thanks to their acquisition of Marvel and Lucasfilm, hopes were high that some hot news might drop, but outside of some casting for some Pixar movies, it didn't really happen.

12 Years A Slave

And one move that's already on the tip of everyone's tongue is Steve McQueen's star-studded "12 Years A Slave." And feeling the hype, Fox Searchlight is looking to make the movie their Oscar horse.

They say when one door closes another opens, but it seems that for Brit actress Holliday Grainger, she's got more than the one door to choose from. While the actress is probably best known stateside for her turn as Lucrezia Borgia in the recently canceled "The Borgias," she's quietly been racking up appearances in stuff like Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina," Cary Fukunaga's "Jane Eyre," Mike Newell's "Great Expectations" and more. Now it looks as though she'll be donning yet more elaborate period costumes.

Even before Mark Romanek yelled action on "One Hour Photo," his debut feature film, he was already a trailblazer behind the camera. The filmmaker had made a name for himself as a music video director, helming iconic spots for Lenny Kravitz ("Are You Gonna Go My Way"), Nine Inch Nails ("Closer"), Madonna ("Bedtime Stories"), Michael Jackson ("Scream"), Fiona Apple ("Criminal"), Johnny Cash ("Hurt") and much, much more. His videos were bold and found Romanek easily able to switch genres musically and stylistically without batting an eye, delivering evocative spots that both defined Romanek and the artists he worked with. But when it came to his feature film, he largely kept the flashy stylization at bay.

After a bit of rocky start which saw Mark Romanek leave, with Kenneth Branagh dropping in to to replace him, Disney is solidering ahead with "Cinderella." Cate Blanchett has stayed on board as the evil stepmother during the tumult that has also seen a range of names including Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Alicia Vikander and Gabriella Wilde flirt with the title role, with none locking to place. And it seems Disney is continuing the hunt.
