You can tell that 2012 is going to be a strange sort of year when the boldest, riskiest film set for release stars a brace of A-listers, including the traditionally safe-playing likes of Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant and Halle Berry, and is directed by the pair behind one of the biggest franchises of the last couple of decades. But nothing due in the next twelve months seems quite as bonkers, as potentially brilliant and/or disastrous as "Cloud Atlas," the long-awaited adaptation of David Mitchell's brilliant, acclaimed novel, from the Wachowskis ("The Matrix") and Tom Tykwer ("Perfume," "Run Lola Run").

To call "Cloud Atlas" ambitious would be an understatement. The film is based on the complex novel by David Mitchell, and the story follows six plot threads across time—a 19th century notary on a Pacific expedition, a bisexual musician in the 1930s, a female journalist embroiled in a thriller in 1970s California, an aging publisher in London in the present, a clone in a futuristic dystopia, and a Pacific survivor in a post-apocalyptic world—all of which fold in on themselves. Oh yeah, all the characters may be sharing the same soul that has traveled through time.

Even with an already starry cast that will feature the actors playing multiple roles, it seems there is still room for one more in The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer's "Cloud Atlas," as Variety report that James D'Arcy has boarded the film.

I'm Just A Boy/Girl/Robot, Standing In Front Of A Girl/Boy/Post-Apocalyptic Tribesman, Asking Them To Love Him/Her/ItIt might be difficult to throw a rock in a multiplex in the next few months without hitting a movie starring Matt Damon, Jude Law or Rachel Weisz (let alone Jessica Chastain, who has enough movies to play on every screen), but not every actor has the same work ethic. Some like to take their time over their films, picking only the roles that really interest them; Daniel Day-Lewis, for instance. Some stick fairly rigorously to a one-movie-a-year-policy. And some would rather do pretty much anything than make movies; in particular British star Hugh Grant, who's made no secret of his dislike for the whole actually-shooting-a-film rigmarole.

Reps Admit Actors Is In Discussions For 'Bond 23'"It’s very clever what [the directors are] gonna try and do. I’m really really really excited about it,” Jim Sturgess recently teased us about "Cloud Atlas." “I think it’s going to be bonkers, it’s either going to work or it’s not. I’m really excited to see if we can pull it off, because it’s ambitious what they want to do."

With production set to begin in just a few short weeks, it looks like the last few pieces of casting for the ambitious adaptation of "Cloud Atlas" are falling into place as "One Day" star Jim Sturgess is the lastest actor to come aboard. USA Today confirms what we've been hearing about Sturgess' involvement in the picture as they say, he "next ventures to Berlin to film the Wachowski brothers' new movie 'Cloud Atlas.'"

With reports previously touting the forthcoming "Cloud Atlas" as the most expensive German production of all time -- with a budget said to be in the neighborhood of $150 million -- as the start date nears, there price tag has been lowered but don't think for a second that the project has gotten any smaller in scope.

It looks like The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer have been hitting the Asian film section of their local video store (or more likely, their Netflix queue).

As this writer posited a few months ago, there's an argument to be made that the co-directing Wachowski siblings Andy and Lana lost their mojo after "The Matrix" and the spark that once made them special has faded. Their follow-up films have been lackluster: “Speed Racer,” the last two “Matrix” movies and most of the films they’ve produced (”Ninja Assassin,” “The Invasion”) during the aughts were straight up duds or major disappointments. But there's plenty of options that could bring redemption.

Author David Mitchell Reveals How The "Epic, Glorious" Film Will Differ From The NovelDeclared by German media as "the most expensive German film of all time," boasting an all star cast including Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon and Jim Broadbent (playing mutiple characters no less) and with both The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer at the helm, it could easily be said that "Cloud Atlas" has a world of expectation riding on its shoulders.
