Are the Wachowskis ready to make good on the promise they showed those many, many years ago? After making the lesbian thriller "Bound" and the groundbreaking "The Matrix," the siblings diluted their goodwill with two bloated, disappointing sequels and then flopped with "Speed Racer" (though the film does have its champions in certain quarters). On the producing front, while they scored with "V For Vendetta" they failed to deliver with "The Invasion" and "Ninja Assassin." In the same vein, Tom Tykwer made a big name for himself with "Run Lola Run" and has failed to match that success since, with a series of films of decreasing quality culminating in last year's truly awful "Three." As the saying goes, go big or go home and for their next directing effort all three helmers are teaming up and getting together one helluva cast to adapt one of the most celebrated, and complex, novels in recent memory.

While they transformed the landscape with the game-changing "Matrix" film, the Wachowski siblings Andy and Lana (formerly Larry) have truly failed, at least outside their hardcore constituents, to live up to their initial promise. Their follow-up films, "Speed Racer," the last two "Matrix" movies and most of the films they've produced ("Ninja Assassin," "The Invasion") during the aughts were major disappointments. Likewise, German filmmaker Tom Tykwer took the international film world by storm in 1998 with "Run Lola Run," but has failed to connect with audiences or critics with his subsequent films ("Heaven," "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" and "The International").

Actors Will Play Multiple Roles In ProjectTo date, The Wachowskis have never quite lived up to their promise. After a strong debut with lesbian noir "Bound," they reinvented the action movie with "The Matrix," a film as seriously influential as any since "Star Wars" -- hence the slavish copycats that have clogged up sci-fi pictures in the last 10 years. But the sequels were bloated and near-unwatchable, failing to understand what made the first film special, while their only other directorial credit since -- "Speed Racer" -- gave us a giant headache, even if we can sort of understand those who defend it as a piece of pop art.

News on the Wachowskis' gestating adaptation of "Cloud Atlas" have been coming in fits and starts. Halle Berry, Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman were all attached last summer, but that was a while ago and priorities tend of shift. Add to that, as of January, Portman revealed that it still needed financing. But all that said, it looks like the Wachowskis are still putting their cast together and have potentially enlisted the assistance of a long-time collaborator.

Natalie Portman Says Her Potential Role In The Film Will Be "Nothing Major"You can't help but be a little bit amused. Featured in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Natalie Portman -- in a sidebar element discussing other things than acting and "Black Swan" -- is asked about her rumored participation in "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Superman: The Man Of Steel." She essentially denies both claiming she knows nothing of either and of course superhero devotee sites publish this news instantly.
