'Frozen,' 'Planes' & 'The Smurfs 2' Among 19 Finalists For 2014 Animated Feature Oscar Nomination

After our own Drew Taylor declared "Frozen" to be a new Disney classic, perhaps you won't be too surprised to learn that it has been submitted and accepted as a finalist for Best Animated Feature Film. But don't get fooled. The only criteria for the 19 movies that made the cut seems to be that they meet the eligibility requirements so flops like "The Croods" and "Free Birds" along with critical punching bags like "Planes" and "The Smurfs 2" get the same consideration as Hayao Mizayaki's "The Wind Rises." Although profits from this weekend were lower overall than those from this time last year (roughly $19 million less, or a 13.4% drop), the box office still did decently ($123 million—not too shabby) thanks to the top two films and their reportedly mind-blowing visual effects, which made filmgoers more inclined to fork over a few extra dollars for 3D and IMAX.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
If the summer went out with a whimper, September is going out with a friendly shrug. With a little over a third of the number of films in release as last year (44 compared to 120), the box office managed to stick in there, missing last year's domestic gross by roughly only $11.7 million (2012—$119.3 million, 2013—$107.6 million). Now what does that mean? Well, there weren't that many choices, but nearly the same amount of people showed up and the average film did better statistically. Don't worry though, this should turn around soon as more prestigious and awards-eying films to continue to roll out in the upcoming weeks.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
One of the biggest, most pleasant surprises of 2009 was "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs." Loosely based on the slim children's book by Judi and Ron Barrett, directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (who at the time were best known for their cult TV series "Clone High"), and produced by the relatively unproven Sony Animation, it seemingly came out of nowhere and totally delighted just about everyone who saw it. Of course, an unexpected hit always leads to a more expected follow-up, so this fall we're getting "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2," whose new trailer just dropped online.

Well, there will be no other movies this year that will make a leak/leek pun, so in that regard, "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2" stands alone. But it's also going to be the only movie this year with food that talks. And swims. And drives boats.

While everyone up in Park City is working their way through indie films that are about Important Things and could be potential Oscar Winners, the studio gravy train will always be franchises, sequels, tentpoles and blockbusters. So here's some reminders of where most of the money in Hollywood is spent each year.

(Former) shock rocker (is he all that shocking anymore?) Marilyn Manson seems to be enjoying this whole acting thing. He's done bit parts here and there over the years ("Party Monster" and "Jawbreaker" among them), but it seems he's taking a bigger step toward movie roles. He already has a stint in Quentin Dupieux's "Wrong Cops" and how he's headed to cable. Brian Warner will stretch his wings playing himself in a guest spot on Showtime's "Californication" starring David Duchovny. Production on the series is now underway and you can see the longawaited Manson/Duchovny pairing in 2013 on the seventh season's seventh episode. [THR]
