OK, slightly old news. We already knew that members of Mumford and Sons were collaborating with Justin Timberlake, Oscar Isaac and the cast members of the Coen Brothers' '60s folk scene movie "Inside Llewyn Davis." The likely connection is that lead Son, Marcus Mumford, is married to the film's co-lead Carey Mulligan and well, he's a pretty well-respected musician to boot.

Even after the major success of "O Brother Where Art Thou" and the critical acclaim of "The Man Who Wasn't There," they weren't able to get their Brad Pitt-starring adaptation of James Dickey's WWII novel "To the White Sea" financed, and two commercially-aimed star-laden pictures, "Intolerable Cruelty" and "The Ladykillers," had disappointed financially and seen them pick up the worst reviews of their careers.

Of all the genres to try and pull off, the romantic caper flick -- think "To Catch A Thief," or "Charade," or even "Ocean's Eleven" -- is one of the trickiest. For such a film to work out, it's got to be as light as a feather and feel entirely effortless, and all too many films aiming to hit that sweet spot end up feel entirely effort-ful. But if anyone feels like they might be suited to that sort of thing, it would be the Coen Brothers, who penned the script for the remake of a minor classic of the genre, the 1966 Michael Caine/Shirley MacLaine film "Gambit." Have they pulled off?

Coen Brothers Going The Indie Route With 'Inside Llewyn Davis'

After the runaway success of "True Grit," which nabbed a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide, you'd figure Joel and Ethan Coen would cash in their chips with a major studio, try to get something expensive made, or force the major studios to pony up prior to shooting. The Coens haven't operated independently for awhile, as a distributor has been in place for their last few films before the project was even shot. This time, however, the brothers are doing something different: out of the Toronto International Film Festival, the rumor is that the Coens' latest, "Inside Llewyn Davis," will be filmed without a domestic distributor attached, with only Studio Canal backing the picture for international rights.

As 'The Dark Tower' Crumbles, Here Are 10 Dead Projects In Search Of Resurrection

One of the more ambitious projects in recent memory, "The Dark Tower," was canceled earlier this week by Universal Pictures. It's not a surprise, as the studio also recently put the kibosh on a $150 million-budgeted R-rated take on "At the Mountains of Madness" by Guillermo del Toro and Ron Howard, and Akiva Goldsman's multi-platform, multi-film Stephen King adaptation was arguably more risky and definitely much more expensive. We here at The Playlist root for movies to be good, but we mostly root for movies to be made, for a director to complete their vision and for it to have a chance to reach an audience and possibly become a part of the popular culture.

The Coen Brothers Next Film Will Take On The '60s New York City Folk Scene

Will Be Loosely Based On The Life Of Dave Van Ronk; Will They Shoot On 16mm?It wasn't too long ago that we got our first morsel of info on what the Coen Brothers might be following up their adaptation of "True Grit" with. We sat in on a conversation the sibling directors had with Noah Baumbach at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center earlier in the month and they revealed they were at work on a music-based project. While they were mum on most of the details, they said it was “kind of like ‘Margot At The Wedding,’ ” Baumbach’s 2007 film, in which during the immediate opening of the film, the audience is just dropped into a scene already in progress without any setup or establishing shots or narration to let them know what’s going on. Joel Coen also suggested that the music in the mystery film would be "pretty much all performed live, single instrument." Well, there is now a much more complete picture of where the Coens will be venturing next.
