Paul Dano Confirms He Tested For ‘Akira,’ Says Someone Like Rian Johnson Should Direct

One of the busier actors in show business has to be twenty-eight year-old Paul Dano. Having turned heads in the moody indie “L.I.E.” when he was only sixteen years old, it was only years later before he was able to stand toe-to-toe with Daniel Day-Lewis in “There Will Be Blood,” cementing his status as a fresh face that wasn’t going anywhere. His latest role is in “For Ellen,” where he plays a rock musician struggling to regain custody of his daughter. However, one look at what’s happened to the others films he’s been linked to in recent months casts a clearer picture of just how in demand he has been, and how opportunities can sometimes fall by the wayside for a variety of reasons.

While other young actors might be chasing the next hot project, few of Paul Dano's colleagues boast the kind of resume he has already assembled thus far into his career. Earning early notice thanks to turns in "L.I.E." and "The Girl Next Door," he broke out with the comedy smash "Little Miss Sunshine" and has since worked with folks like Paul Thomas Anderson ("There Will Be Blood"), Spike Jonze ("Where The Wild Things Are"), Ang Lee ("Taking Woodstock"), James Mangold ("Knight & Day") and Jon Favreau ("Cowboys & Aliens"). Not bad. And in 2012, he's already showing off a diverse slate from the indie "For Ellen" (that recently premiered at Sundance) to Rian Johnson's forthcoming sci-fi trip "Looper." And next month, he spars with Robert De Niro in "Being Flynn." We recently caught up with the actor and discussed some of things he's working on year.

Last fall, a project burbled up to the surface entitled "College Republicans." Penned by Wes Jones -- and making the 2010 Black List of best unproduced screenplays -- the project was gaining some heat with Richard Linklater rumored for the director's chair and Shia LaBeouf apparently sniffing around the lead role. Well, nearly a year has passed and the film is coming together with a few changes to the lineup.

You may not know the name Wes Jones yet, but if his success continues, the screenwriter may become as well known as say, Allan Loeb ("Wall Street 2"), Aline Brosh McKenna ('The Devil Wears Prada"), Diablo Cody ("Juno"), or some of the other well-known now-established scribes who were scrappy up-and-comers a few years ago (super relative of course, not everyone knows these name compared to say Paddy Chayefsky, even then...we digress...).
