"Community" season six will take place, thanks to an unlikely assist from Yahoo, but new episodes —arriving week by week, old school TV style— aren't expected to drop until the very end of the year at the earliest. Never fear! The show is giving something extra to the fans to hold them over until then.

Even Though It's Going Online, You'll Still Have To Watch 'Community' Season 6 One Episode At A Time, Each Week

While Yahoo has been producing modest amounts of exclusive video content (such as the underseen faux reality series "Burning Love"), the tech giant is set to challenge the likes of Netflix and Amazon in the "prestige tv" sweepstakes . At the end of June, Yahoo swooped in and saved "Community" from disappearing forever by ordering up a sixth season, and it wasn't long before movie talks emerged. But will the company squander its most high profile programming asset by presenting it in a week-to-week schedule that viewers (especially online) have long abandoned?

"Community" is alive for at least one more season, thanks to a last minute save by Yahoo, who picked up the show just as contracts for everyone involved were about to run out. And apparently those movie talks are already sort of happening. But one player who has been curiously silent about all of this is NBC, who basically decided that the cult show wasn't worth keeping around, and canceled it this past spring. Well, this weekend, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told the press assembled for the Television Critics Association why the network ultimately axed "Community."

While "Community" fans have been ringing the six-seasons-and-a-movie bell for years, it never really seemed like something that would actually happen. While the comedy built up a small but vocal following, it never looked like it would be enough for anyone to fund a movie, particularly after NBC canceled the show after five seasons this past spring. But yesterday a miracle arrived at literally the last minute. With the cast's contracts set to expire after June 30th, Sony Pictures Television struck a deal with Yahoo for a thirteen-episode sixth season, and yes, thoughts are already turning to a movie.

Today was do or die for "Community." June 30th marked the final day Sony Pictures Television had options on the cast members for the cult-loved show, and the prospects of continuing the series looked dire after NBC canceled it after five seasons. Meanwhile, Hulu toyed with but eventually abandoned the idea of picking it up, leaving Sony about one week to try and put together a deal for the show. And they did.

It seemed almost too good to be true. After being on the brink with NBC since it pretty much began, the network finally delivered the blow to the cult loved "Community," cancelling the show earlier this year, denying fans the six-seasons-and-a-movie prophecy. But then salvation seemed to be around the corner when streaming site Hulu toyed with the idea of re-upping the show for a sixth season, but alas, it seems Dan Harmon's creation is really and truly on its last legs barring some kind of miracle.

At least Dan Harmon can claim a bit of consistency with his recent television work: his animated Adult Swim comedy “Rick and Morty” will return for a second season. However, that perpetual question mark known as “Community” continues to defeat fans’ hopes and renew them with each passing day, as the series’ cancellation before its sixth season on NBC now faces the possibility of an online streaming revival.

Six Seasons And A Movie? Nope—NBC Cancels 'Community'

Now, before anyone can say NBC didn't give "Community" a chance, they did—several times over. Though it developed a vocal and earnest cult following, the Dan Harmon-created show never managed to hit the mainstream with any impact, and bless their hearts, NBC really tried to throw a lifeline to the show. But repeatedly, the show served up low ratings, and Dan Harmon exiting for season four and returning for season five did little to boost the fortunes of the show (though it did outperform "Parks and Recreation" this season, which got renewed but is arguably much more syndication friendly). And now, it's no more.

It looks like the one-time gag, "six seasons and a movie" could actually be a very real thing. The NBC comedy "Community," which has never grown beyond a devoted cult fan base, always teetering on the edge of being canceled due to low ratings, could actually make it to the big screen. At least if this latest report is in any way accurate.

While we didn't think the idea of a "Murder, She Wrote" reboot was entirely egregious, it looks like Jessica Fletcher herself is less convinced the idea will work. Angela Lansbury recently spoke with Associated Press (via Herald Sun) and revealed she wishes CBS wouldn't jump off the show she made famous.
