Having just reached a full 350 episodes of candid monologues and one-on-one interviews with comedy elite, the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast has become the go-to destination for rich discussion of the entertainment business and its denizens. It also provides a rare chance for reflection upon a career, and in “Iron Man” helmer Jon Favreau's case, an opportunity to discuss perhaps his biggest misstep as a director.

No one likes to celebrate flops. No, really. OK, maybe when an arrogant, mouthy producer or star delivers a turd that had it coming, or some awful franchise finally stumbles, but especially in the latter case, when does that ever happen?

Listen, I know what you expect from me. After last week's showing, you're expecting me to wax poetic about Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling and all the man beauty at the box office. Nope. What Chris Evans and I have is special and beautiful and I will not sully it with that cad, Ryan. I will leave that salivating to the male portion of the Playlist, as Mr. Gosling is the designated man crush. I don't need to build him up anymore than the rest of these dudes have. He's a great actor with a wonderful sense of personal style. THE END. All I will say about Mr. Craig is that I hope his bum is insured by Lloyd's of London for as much as J. Lo's booty. Anyway! In theaters this week! The improbably premised "Cowboys & Aliens"! Rom-com for men, "Crazy, Stupid Love"! "The Smurfs".... You know it's not a week without a dumb movie for children! Let's do it to it.

For a time in the 1980s and 1990s, Harrison Ford was untouchable, and basically the biggest movie star in the world. He'd cropped up in bits and pieces in the 1970s (most notably small roles in "American Graffiti" and "The Conversation,") but Han Solo turned him into an instant matinee screen idol: he was the beating human heart in George Lucas' "Star Wars," cynical and vulnerable at once, the figure that made all the cosmic silliness fly with audiences, and appropriately became the franchise's biggest break-out star. Only a few years later, lightning struck again, when he was made the last minute replacement for Tom Selleck in Lucas and Steven Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," a hall-of-fame action-adventure that would spawn three sequels.

It was only about 15 years ago that Jon Favreau first arrived on the scene as the hipster indie film festival darling of “Swingers” fame. After sharing the screen with Vince Vaughn in one more flick and being quickly relegated to sidekick roles, Favs decided it was time to step behind the camera. But it wasn’t until the actor/director fully came to terms with his closet geek that he came into his own in Hollywood. Five years ago, newly skinny and holding a canister of film (we guess it would be a disc of data these days, but that just doesn’t sound as romantic) he came to Comic-Con to show off “Iron Man.” Fans were eager, though understandably skeptical. Sure, “Elf” was funny and “Zathura” showed promise, but was this former funny man really the right guy to give Tony Stark proper due on screen?

So far, so good. Jon Favreau's "Cowboys & Aliens" will premiere for the crowds at Comic-Con in just a few weeks and it's a big show of confidence (and thanks) from the filmmaker. As M. Night Shyamalan well knows, the geeks in San Diego aren't shy are about sharing their feelings but Favreau must feel like he's got a big winner on his hands and if the trailers and clips live up to their promise, he'll be right.

When you think about it, the fact that the guy who rolled with Vince Vaughn in "Swingers" has become of one of the biggest tentpole directors in Hollywood is kind of amazing. The fact that he knows how to bring the steak with the sizzle is even better, and "Cowboys & Aliens" looks to be Jon Favreau's meatiest offering yet.

So flying in to the San Diego Comic-Con and bummed already by what won't be playing there? Dry those tears with that Sailor Moon costume you were going to wear and buck up, because one massive summer movie is going to be making its splashy premiere at the convention.
