When you think about it, the fact that the guy who rolled with Vince Vaughn in "Swingers" has become of one of the biggest tentpole directors in Hollywood is kind of amazing. The fact that he knows how to bring the steak with the sizzle is even better, and "Cowboys & Aliens" looks to be Jon Favreau's meatiest offering yet.

Warner Bros, DreamWorks, Disney & The Weinstein Company Pass On San Diego; Marvel On The FenceThe comic/geek crowd are either the most important group to court for genre films or their influence is overstated; it really depends on who you ask. In recent years, the very vocal contingent has generally been thought of as essential to making sure more challenging or niche fare finds an audience or least makes its budget back, but a series of disappointments and flops have the studios reconsidering. Last year, Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" was met with widespread geek acclaim only for the Universal film to sputter at the box office (though to be fair, the marketing for that film did little to embrace anybody outside the core of fans). "Sucker Punch" got major buzz and died on the vine this past spring, while "Tron: Legacy" played modestly despite nerds flipping for footage that Disney teased as early as 2008 (though yes, it has done enough to convince the studio get a sequel moving). And both "Skyline" and "Let Me In" faltered when they hit screens later in the year, after doing the San Diego Comic-Con rounds.

So, "Super 8" was pretty good, huh? With a couple of exceptions among The Playlist team (including this one, who hasn't seen it yet), it's getting very positive reactions, and from the looks of it better-than-expected box office, it's carrying over with general audiences as well, marking an almost unprecedented two blockbusters in a row that turned out to be decent. But is the competition going to sit back and let J.J. Abrams be feted as the king of the summer blockbuster season? Don't count on it.

Something's in the air. The days are getting longer. The weather's getting warmer. Your IQ is dropping by the day. That's right, it's the start of the summer movie season! The critical darlings that get you through the winter moments are a thing of the past, replaced by CGI-packed blockbusters, comedies and the occasional kids' flick, designed principally as a way of tempting you into an air conditioned theater to spend money on ice cream and nachos.

Well, if the goal was to hit mainstream America with this admittedly tough-to-market genre mash-up of western and sci-fi, Universal couldn't have chosen a more meat-and-potatoes crowd than the "American Idol" audience to show off the film to, and now that trailer has landed online for the rest of us to pick apart.

Talks About Importance Of Comic-Con, Film's Emphasis On Stars Over EffectsThese days, the marketing campaign for a big tentpole begins the day that the film is announced. Hell, for some projects -- "Super 8," for instance -- the announcement is part of the marketing campaign. It's a long, hard slog, particularly for a film not based on material familiar to the general public, and it's something that a smart filmmaker will bear in mind throughout the entire process. Jon Favreau's come to know this world very well over the last few years with his two "Iron Man" movies, and when we sat in on a panel and caught up with him during interview rounds last weekend at WonderCon, he shared a certain amount of detail about his approach for this summer's hopeful blockbuster "Cowboys & Aliens," one of the few non-sequels and non-superhero movies competing in a marketplace that Favreau's already described as a potential "bloodbath."

"Cowboys & Aliens" is one of the more intriguing tentpoles to be arriving this summer. In a season filled with sequels and comic book movies, this film lands based on a property that most of Joe Public hasn't read or heard of and it mashes up two genres -- sci-fi and westerns -- that traditionally have been a hard sell at the box office (see "Wild Wild West"). However, in the run up to its release later this summer, you can bet Universal will be pushing the film hard, hoping to sell audiences on its (relatively) unique concept. At the very least, the film won't be lacking in star power as Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano and Olivia Wilde head up the cast. And with "Iron Man" helmer Jon Favreau at the fore, expectations are high for it to deliver some substantial popcorn entertainment.

There are a whole lot of movies coming this summer based on comic books, but the one we're looking forward to most doesn't come from either the Marvel or DC banners. Jon Favreau's "Cowboys & Aliens," based on the graphic novel of the same title, is an ambitious melding of two genres that looks to be delivering the goods on both counts. The first trailer impressed and this afternoon, the Super Bowl spot from the film dropped and within its thirty second runtime, it has renewed our interest in the film all over again.
