Review: '13' Remake Proves To Be One Unlucky Number (To Put It Mildly)

It’s unfortunate, but there’s a Movie Content Hierarchy. Great filmmakers don’t pretend this exists -- Darren Aronofsky makes a horror movie and genre-hating critics love it, and former Fangoria mainstay David Cronenberg maintains his integrity and themes of perversion and body modification while becoming a boutique festival filmmaker. But more often than not, directors, screenwriter and producers are beholden to the unimaginative thought of “this is how it is meant to be done.” More specifically, films from other parts of the world, particularly smaller ones, have their own vocabulary, their own rhythms and idiosyncrasies. Gela Babluani’s “13 Tzameti” is one of those films, a slow burn thriller from France shot in stark black and white and featuring minimal accoutrement in terms of score, outsized performances, or onscreen violence. It’s a picture that aims low but with laser-sharp precision, to the point where you felt that Babluani was a major storytelling talent with little affection for sentimentality or empty showmanship.

The rock 'em, sock 'em futuristic fighting robot movie "Real Steel" swings into theaters this weekend, and tomorrow the soundtrack will drop with some tunes to get you pumped for the pugilistic pic.

Okay, casting gods. You win. As if putting John Cusack and Nicolas Cage in the same film wasn't enough, now the Anchorage Daily News (via Shadow & Act) reports that 50 Cent is adding his questionable talents into the mix for "The Frozen Ground" for what is now a must see movie. Cage + Fiddy? Sign us the fuck up.

50 Cent continues to churn through the cash in the 10-picture, $200 million deal between his Cheetah Vision banner and Hedge Fund Film Partners. He's already got the unintentionally hilarious football drama "Things Fall Apart" and the unintentionally hilarious heist movie "Set Up" in the can (sensing a theme here?). Anyhow, the rapper/actor seems to have found a kindred spirit in Bruce Willis who will apparently do anything for money and will star, once again, with 50 Cent in another sure to be terrible movie.

Forest Whitaker Also Circling RoleFor the love of god Robert De Niro, fire your agent. The once-esteemed actor, who has spent the most part of the last decade or two slogging it out in one mediocre picture after another, apparently doesn't know a good movie anymore even if it walks up and bites him in the ass. The actor hemmed and hawed over the drama "Honeymoon With Harry" to the point where director Jonathan Demme gave up on the project. So what to do next? How about another shitty movie with 50 Cent!

Bruce Willis & Ryan Phillippe Shamed50 Cent is the gift that keeps on giving. Last year, the rapper/actor made a 10-picture, $200 million deal between his Cheetah Vision production banner and Hedge Fund Film Partners which appears to be resulting in a bunch of films shot on the cheap with no attention given to any details or to even the most basic tenets of filmmaking. Case in point: "Things Fall Apart." But this time Bruce Willis and Ryan Phillippe were somehow conned into this latest fiasco, "Set Up," which now has a trailer and we have no idea who keeps getting hired to cut these (though we secret hope Fiddy is doing it himself).

If you want to be taken seriously as an actor, the quickest route to success is to gain/lose a bunch of weight and/or lose your hair. 50 Cent has done both, but don't expect anyone to come calling around awards season time.

Jenna Dewan Tatum aka Mrs. Channing Tatum Also JoinsWe kind of feel for Ryan Philllippe. He's a very talented actor who always seems to get saddled with projects that sound good on paper but end up disappointing for underperforming or both. After "Flags Of Our Fathers," Phillippe starred in a trio of non-starters "Breach," "Stop-Loss" and "Franklyn" and then popped up in a comedic turn in the underrated "MacGruber." But now he's set to take a page out of the Matt Dillon School Of Role Choices.
