5 Things You Might Not Know About 'L.A. Confidential'

It's safe to say that "L.A. Confidential" wasn't greeted with especially high expectations in the run up to its release. James Ellroy's 1990 book, the third of his "L.A. Quartet" (preceded by "The Black Dahlia" and "The Big Nowhere," and completed by "White Jazz") was a favorite among crime fans, but hardly a best seller. Screenwriter Brian Helgeland was known only for "Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master" and a rewrite of actioner "Assassins." Director Curtis Hanson was well-liked, but mostly known for mid-level programmers like "Bad Influence," "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle" and "The River Wild." And the cast was led by two virtual unknowns from the Southern Hemisphere, with the most recognizable names in the cast being Kim Basinger, whose career was a little on the outs, comedy actor Danny DeVito and recently Oscar-nominated character actor Kevin Spacey.

It’s hard to tell if a filmmaker is in 'Director Jail' or if he just doesn’t feel like working. After the critical and commercial misfire “Lucky You,” Curtis Hanson (“L.A. Confidential,” “Wonder Boys,” “8 Mile”) didn’t have much going on. Then 2011 came around, and he made the well-received HBO Wall Street docudrama “Too Big To Fail,” and began filming, only a few weeks ago, the Gerard Butler surfer movie, “Of Men and Mavericks.”

"Live like Jay," said the many followers and fans of Jay Moriarty, the young surfer who rode the fierce Mavericks. The North Californian patch of water was known for devouring surfer blood (the material, not the band), but surviving the trip was Moriarty, the central figure in Curtis Hanson's new film "Mavericks." 22-year-old Jonny Weston, currently working on the James Franco-led porn drama "Cherry," has been cast in the central role and will play Moriarty at 16, when he began training with Rick "Frosty" Hesson (the already attached Gerard Butler) to navigate the harsh waves.

Even though we're kinda fatigued on the subject, "Too Big To Fail," directed by Curtis Hanson and featuring a remarkable ensemble, has certainly grabbed our attention.

It's like fairy tale movies for auteurs. Or something like that. "Margin Call" is coming, and just last night, George Clooney announced his own film about the 2008 bailout but before both of those, we'll get Curtis Hanson's take on the subject with "Too Big To Fail."

Curtis Hanson was on quite a roll for a while there. "L.A. Confidential," "Wonder Boys" and "8 Mile" were a trifecta of critical hits ("Wonder Boys" didn't do so hot at the box office) that put the helmer in the top tier of filmmakers. Unfortunately, his next two efforts found him stumbling hard with "In Your Shoes" and "Lucky You" which were big misses all around. All while he's currently found a home at HBO where he's wrapping up the financial meltdown drama "Too Big To Fail" (geez, another one?), his planned to return to the big screen just got a major boost.
