Oh man, if this movie goes south like Shia LaBeouf's mooted Broadway turn with Alec Baldwin, those leaked emails are gonna be epic. Not that we would wish ill on a movie production, and if you look past the title, there is actually something potentially interesting brewing between LaBeouf and Robert De Niro, of all people.

The story of excitable, if journeyman-level director D.J. Caruso is a long one, with him starting off his career with moodier fare like “The Salton Sea” and the far less impressive “Taking Lives,” before eventually delving into young-adult-prone projects like “Vertigo,” “Eagle Eye,” and last year's “I Am Number Four.” He’s continuing that string of films with the Val Kilmer, Radha Mitchell, Kate Maberly, Chandler Canterbury, and Annalise Basso-starring “The Goat Island,” his passion project indie, which he's just locked and will be showing to distributors. But he won't be sitting idle for long, as Caruso has lined up his next movie pretty quickly.

Update: Variety reports Val Kilmer, Radha Mitchell and Kate Maberly have also joined the film. Kilmer and Mitchell will play parents in the movie, with Maberly taking the role of a camp counselor.

D.J. Caruso Might Take 'A Walk Among The Tombstones'

D.J. Caruso has had an interesting career thus far. He started doing moodier fare like "The Salton Sea" and less notably the Angelina Jolie thriller "Taking Lives." He detoured into the sports gambling movie "Two for the Money" before dropping the Hitchock-ripping "Disturbia," the actioner "Eagle Eye" and then this year's "I Am Number Four." The curious thing is that all of his movies have been middling. Not terrible, but not really that good either, and he's profitable and enthusiastic enough to still get his name on pictures. He already has the comic adaptation "Preacher" on his table, but a decidedly different sort of movie might come first.

While "I Am Number Four" did decent, though not gangbusters numbers over the long holiday weekend, the results combined with the decent CinemaScore of B+ from moviegoers seem to have propelled director D.J. Caruso into his next project. The helmer hit Twitter late last night to announce, "My deal just closed on 'Preacher.' Going back to the dark side and pretty fucking pumped!"

Review: 'I Am Number Four' Is A Sci-Fi 'Twilight' With a Sense of Humor

Based on a novel co-authored by shamed memoirist James Frey, "I Am Number Four" is a sci-fi take on the same sort of material that has made 'Twilight' an international sensation. Instead of sparkly vampires, though, it's a handsome, hounded alien played by Alex Pettyfer that takes center stage. And while it succeeds in some respects, particularly in the fact that it has a sense of humor and some jaunty action set pieces, it all too often falls into the same draggy aimlessness that largely defines the 'Twilight' franchise.

Updated: Well, it looks as per Mr. Caruso's own comments below, that he spoke out of turn. We've spoke to management and agents for the actor and while management confirms that Caruso has met with Appian Way and Leonardo DiCaprio and management has spoken to Fox about the project, no directorial deal or even development deal is in place yet. Let's place this under something that everyone hopes will happen in the future if all parties see eye to eye.
