From Dusk Till Dawn
With his hands already full with the recently released "Machete Kills" and the forthcoming "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For," Robert Rodriguez still found time in 2013 to work on another project, the TV series version of his 1996 genre mashup, "From Dusk Till Dawn." And less than a year after it was first announced, we already have the first teaser trailer giving us a peek at what he's put together. And no surprise here, it's pure pulp.

Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson in G.I. Joe: Retaliation
It’s tough to say if I would be as generous with my praise of “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” if I weren’t such a big fan of its director, Jon M. Chu, but given the mechanical one-dimensionality of most big-budget franchise films, the sequel earns its critical bona fides simply by being made by a director who has sincere affection for the source material. Although its delay from the summer of 2012 to spring 2013 spawned rumors of a troubled production, extensive reshoots, and a last-minute effort to squeeze the now-hot Channing Tatum into more scenes, Chu’s follow-up is remarkably cohesive – a fun, sweeping and yet understated sequel that should whet the appetites of action fans without overdosing them on pop confectionaries before the summer buffet truly starts.

Wait a minute? Didn't we have a shortlist on this already? Sort of. A couple weeks back it was reported that Ben Foster, Paul Dano, Aaron Paul and Milo Ventimiglia were all going to be reading for the part of Bruce Willis' offspring in "A Good Day To Die Hard." Well, none of those guys survived except for the "Breaking Bad" star and he's got three people fighting him for the job, that he might not get anyway due to scheduling commitments for the AMC show.

Despite being an ugly, cartoony, badly-acted mess with very little to recommend it, 2009's "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" managed a fairly impressive $150 million gross in a late summer slot, which is the very least of an excuse that franchise-happy Paramount needed to greenlight a sequel. But that doesn't mean that they're not going to shake things up: director Stephen Sommers clashed with the studio on the original, and has departed for the supernatural thriller "Odd Thomas," while an eye on the bottom line has seen most of the original cast members, including Marlon Wayans, Christopher Ecclestone, Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller, Dennis Quaid and, most unsurprisingly, the since-gone-supernova Joseph Gordon-Levitt, put out to pasture.
