Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus
The hashtag meme #teamInsertPerson’sNameHere—to convey firm endorsement—is perhaps like everything on Twitter, utterly reductive and destructive to any kind of nuanced discourse. It’s a black and white, you’re either for or against, with no other options and it's often used in the favor of auteurs or anyone receiving a critical bashing (“I don’t care what anyone thinks, I’m #teamPaulW.S.Anderson”). That said, despite an uneven career trajectory in recent years (including an ill-conceived attack on A.O. Scott recently), if forced to choose, I would avow myself as member of team Spike Lee.

Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus
Filmmaker Spike Lee continues to keep audiences on their toes. He’s seemingly always got one documentary in the works (the next is “Go Brazil Go”), he hasn’t strayed far from his indie roots (“Red Hook Summer”) and he won’t shy away from a big budget remake either (“Oldboy”). The 25th anniversary of “Do The Right Thing” is right around the corner (it's screening at BAM as part of BAMCinemafest soon). And then of course there’s his upcoming crowdsourced Kickstarter film, “Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus.”

Spike Lee has had better points in his career than this one. It's a full eight years since his last legitimate hit, "Inside Man," and recent attempts at a comeback have ended up disappointing somewhat: John Boyega-starring HBO show "Da Brick" didn't get picked up beyond a pilot, indie "Red Hook Summer" failed to find much of an audience, and last year's "Oldboy" was a critical and commercial washout.

Oldboy, Spike Lee
With Spike Lee's Kickstarter-funded "Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus" set to premiere at the American Black Film Festival next month, the always busy filmmaker isn't stopping for a moment. He's got a handful of projects on the horizon, including comedy specials for both Katt Williams and Jerrod Carmichael, and there's now a documentary to keep an eye out for.

Oldboy, Spike Lee
For an icon always welcome to controversy and a worthy cinematic challenge, Spike Lee’s reinterpretation of Park Chan-wook’s classic “Oldboy” is a logical fit. However, the similarities essentially end there: drawing heavily from the original Japanese manga as well, the film marks new stylistic ground for Lee, telling the story of Joe Doucett (played by Josh Brolin), a man locked up without reason and released 20 years later to find his captor and exact revenge. Not exactly Thanksgiving material, but next week is exactly when Lee will unleash his new work. And while we’ve got a couple new posters and some footage to herald its arrival, the director also recently dropped a hint as to when we’ll see his Kickstarter-bred project.

Spike Lee
You gotta hand it to Spike Lee, he's keeping us on our toes. Never one to take the easy road or obvious path, the filmmaker has been bobbing and weaving with a diverse slate of projects, going from Michael Jackson documentary "Bad 25," to little indie "Red Hook Summer," with a trio of wildly different upcoming projects including the "Oldboy" remake, stage show adaptation "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth" and his crowdsourced "Da Blood Of Jesus." So what direction is he going next?

Oldboy
With Park Chan-wook's entire vengeance trilogy getting remade (“Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance” just nabbed a helmer, while "Sympathy For Lady Vengeance" starring Charlize Theron continues to develop), Spike Lee's stab at "Oldboy" will be first at the gate, and likely the most scrutinized. The original is beloved in many quarters, with fans openly wondering how this Hollywood take will deal with some of the darker corners of the South Korean version.

The Kickstarter campaign is over, and Spike Lee now has a little over $1.4 million dollars to make his next movie. Details are still being played close to the vest, but Lee is starting to assemble his cast, and is bringing an old pal back into the 40 Acres And A Mule fold.
