There are two types of “Prometheus” fans: those who are huge fans of the “Alien” franchise and thus have poured over every ounce of the amazing bounty of extras in the “Prometheus” Blu-Ray, and those who are more casual, who want to know a bit more, are perhaps a bit puzzled and intrigued by the Damon Lindelof-penned, Ridley Scott-directed sorta-prequel to the 1979 film. We’ll assume you’re in the latter camp.

Back in May, genre enthusiasts got pretty excited when it emerged that writer Damon Lindelof and director Brad Bird had set up a mysterious project at Disney known only as "1952." The only clues were that it was a sci-fi tentpole and plans were in place to get it in front of cameras in 2013. With the new year approaching, a few more scraps of info about what the project is have emerged, as well as the story behind its title.

So just how much of a nightmare is Paramount's "World War Z"? By the looks of it, a zombie apocalypse would be preferable to what they're going through on the Brad Pitt tentpole. With the movie delayed to next summer, seven weeks of reshoots tentatively planned for this fall and the studio honcho admitting that so far, they've only got 45 minutes to 1 hour of a decent movie, a helluva lot of work needs to be done to prevent this from becoming a cautionary tale executives talk about in retirement. It was only last month that "Lost" and "Prometheus" scribe Damon Lindelof was brought in to try and bang out something better than what Paramount had before, but it turns out, he had a bit of help.

Making his name famously or infamously (depending how you look at it) as a writer and producer on the hit ABC series "Lost," Damon Lindelof's career has moved moved in leaps and bounds. With "Cowboys & Aliens" and "Prometheus" under his belt and "Star Trek 2," "World War Z" and the mysterious "1952" on the horizon, he's a highly sought after name for blockbuster material, and one might think the small screen is just not that interesting of a challenge anymore. Well, guess again.

Frustrated? Angry? Bored? Hungry? Ready to move on? Yes, the online conversation surrounding Ridley Scott's ambitious, belated return to the science-fiction genre in "Prometheus" is nearly exhausted. Depending on who you are, you've either experienced enough for a lifetime (online writers and editors surely have), but if you're the audience who may have just recently caught the film, your thirst for more discussion around the film might not have been sated quite yet.

Well, "Prometheus" is in theaters. And if nothing else, it's been causing more furious debate -- in multiplex lobbies, in bars, online -- than most movies in recent memory. And The Playlist head office has been a warzone, with some loving the film, some loathing it, and some (like our review) falling somewhere in the middle. Name-calling and threats of physical violence have ensued.

With the Marc Forster-directed, Brad Pitt-starring "World War Z" not only being pushed back to next summer, but gearing up for seven weeks of reshoots, the stink of "disaster" is beginning to emanate from this one. And now, one man will try to repair the film. His name? Damon Lindelof.

Over thirty years after the 'space jockey' first appeared in "Alien," and after a couple of months of speculation and rumor, Ridley Scott's "Prometheus," his return to sci-fi for the first time since "Blade Runner", and his continuation/prequel/spin-off/whatever to his 1979 space horror classic, finally hits theaters today. It's one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year, and is already inspiring fierce debate (The Playlist team are split down the middle on the project, with wildly divided reactions from those who've seen it).

Ambition is a rare thing in movies these days, especially when it comes to summer blockbuster fare. There might be ambitions to blow up bigger things, or include more bad guys, or feature more stars, but in terms of real ambition -- telling big stories, about big subjects, on a huge canvas -- only a handful of filmmakers are really playing ball. Far more so than its predecessor "Alien," which is, after all, pretty much a haunted house designed to scare the living hell out of you, Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" has big ambitions. It wants to ask the big questions -- where do we come from? Why are we here? -- while also serving as a 3D, CGI-filled thrill ride.
