'Trading Places': More Than 7 Things You May Not Know About The Film (But We Won't Bet A Dollar On It)

Thirty years ago, "Trading Places," John Landis' classic comedy, premiered to critical and commercial success. Not only was it the 4th highest grossing film of 1983 (making over $90 million, behind "Flashdance," "Terms of Endearment," and "Return of the Jedi"), but the film also received praise from the likes of Roger Ebert ("This is good comedy") and Rex Reed ("Trading Places is an updated Frank Capra with four-letter words, and I can think of no higher praise than that"). The film is about two beyond-wealthy yet bored brothers (Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) who swap out a well-to-do finance guy in their employ (Dan Aykroyd) with a homeless conman (Eddie Murphy) just to watch the world burn, oh no, we mean to test the good old "nature vs. nurture" debate.

Earlier today, original "Ghostbusters" cast member (and co-writer) Dan Aykroyd revealed some details about the proposed "Ghostbusters 3." The project is a thing that, not unlike ghosts, ghouls, and specters, has yet to produce concrete evidence backing up the fact that it actually exists (or ever will). Aykroyd talked about story details, and confirmed that, yes, it is unlikely that Bill Murray will be a part of the new project. Still missing: cast details, a release date, and confirmation that this isn't an elaborate figment of Aykroyd's imagination brought on by drinking too much Crystal Head vodka.

Oh god, no. I mean, interesting news on the "Ghostbusters 3" front today. Dan Aykroyd, the self-appointed "cheerleader" of the "Ghostbusters" had a long sit down with Esquire and of course they delved into a long conversation about "Ghostbusters 3." The script appears to be done. It appears to be as "ready" as it's ever been (lord, when have we heard that one before). It's apparently the script everyone wants to make and Aykroyd even talks about potential 4th and 5th "Ghostbusters" films. Have mercy.

He was a good sport enough to spoof himself and the film in 2009's "Zombieland" (which you can see below) and at the 2010 Spike TV Scream Awards, but enough is apparently enough. It's official: Bill Murray won't reprise his role as Peter Venkman in "Ghostbusters 3," according to Dan Aykroyd himself. "No, I can tell you he won't be involved," Aykroyd said after being asked about Murray's participation for what has to be the umpteenth time.

And so what's happening with the proposed after-the-fact threequel? Well, while Murray didn't exactly spell it out, recent news seems to confirm all suspicions: the most recent drafts of "Ghostbusters 3" have been thrown in the trash and inveterate "Ghosbusters" champion and producer Dan Aykroyd is starting over.

The currently shooting "The Bitter Pill," starring Channing Tatum and Rooney Mara, marks Steven Soderbergh's penultimate feature film, after which the curtains will close with his long-gestating Liberace biopic "Behind The Candelabra," which films this summer. Jake and Elwood may have been on a mission from God, but Dan Aykroyd is on a mission to milk anything he's ever been associated with death for cash. Last summer it was reported that Aykroyd and co. were developing a "Glee"-style TV series based on the "The Blues Brothers" but it appears that's just the tip of the iceberg. At MIPTV it has been announced that Blues Brothers Approved Ventures LLC has teamed with Panacea Entertainment in an effort to whore out the fedora wearing duo in a variety of avenues that will include: an animated series, a Broadway show, a Vegas show, a radio network, social networking (?) and more. Comparing the brand to Coca-Cola and Nike (LOL), Panacea hopes to bring the characters to an audience "around the globe." Remember "Blues Brothers 2000"? That's all we're going to say about this....

Dan Aykroyd may be mostly busy these days talking up a “Ghostbusters” sequel that seems unlikely to ever happen (and do we even want it to without the involvement of the great Bill Murray?), while Chevy Chase is part of television’s best comedy ensemble on NBC’s “Community.” Their respective stars may not be as high as they once were, and likely never will be again, but let’s not forget how talented these two men have shown themselves to be, so it’s with a degree of excitement that we welcome news that the pair are planning to re-team for a new comedy.

For over twenty years, Dan Aykroyd has had a dream. A dream of a third film in the "Ghostbusters" franchise. While the 1989 sequel was poorly received, there's been enough love for the seminal original that an interest has always been there, although Aykroyd's 1990s script for a third installment was deemed too expensive. In recent years, however, it looked like it might actually become a reality: a 2009 video game reunited the original cast, including Bill Murray, and Sony commissioned a new script from "Bad Teacher" writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, with original director Ivan Reitman set to return.
