Ron Howard, Assessment
Erstwhile star of the beacon of TV Americana that was “Happy Days,” occasional actor, and now Oscar-winning director and major Hollywood power player, Ron Howard is, by every account you can find the length and breadth of the World Wide Web, a really nice guy. Almost every interview starts with a reference to his niceness, his approachability, his affability, his talent for not taking himself too seriously. Which kind of makes it okay for us not to take him too seriously either.

So far, for the most part, a good chunk of the 2013 awards contenders have been seen, but only by those high falutin' critical types at film festivals -- as we saw last week. But that started to change last week with the release of two legit Best Picture contenders: Ron Howard's "Rush," and Denis Villeneuve's "Prisoners." So even those trying to stick their head in the sand and avoid Oscar season aren't going to have much of a choice from here on out.

While “Lincoln” hovers in DreamWorks' awards season spotlight mainly for Daniel Day Lewis' towering performance, the studio is wisely also glancing ahead to its other doppelganger drama, WikiLeaks biopic “The Fifth Estate,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange. They've certainly put in a vote of confidence with a locked winter 2013 release date, but one party remain less than thrilled simply on the entire prospect: the famed whistleblower himself.

Before he came known to film fans on this side of the ocean for his turn as Fredrick Zoller in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," savvy cinema lovers already knew that Brühl was an actor of incredible talent. He broke out with the one-two punch of "Goodbye Lenin!" and "The Edukators." He followed that up with a solid turn in the WWII drama "Joyeux Noel" and in the indie "2 Days In Paris," but Hollywood finally came calling, as he landed a role in "The Bourne Ultimatum." But the actor doesn't seem to be in any rush, nor particularly interested, in bagging roles in U.S. just for the sake of it, but when Ron Howard comes calling with a project as tantalizing as "Rush," you take the call and check your calendar.
