It feels like the summer movie season has been underway for some time already, given that last month saw the arrival of huge blockbuster "The Hunger Games," as well as "21 Jump Street," an R-rated comedy that's taken an enormously impressive $130 million. And that's even without mentioning those that hoped to be big box office stuff, but fell at the first: "John Carter," already taking its place among the annals of the great flops, and "Wrath Of The Titans," which has taken less than half what its predecessor made domestically.

We've had an inkling thus far that "Dark Shadows" would be a return to form for both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, whose batting average over their last few films -- "Alice In Wonderland," "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" -- has been inconsistent at best. But this latest, extensive look at the movie seems to indicate they are back on track in a big way.

Composer Danny Elfman has written the score to Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows," starring Johnny Depp, natch. It probably sounds a little like the music featured here (though you can actually hear it here). However, what's likely a bit more interesting than the original score, is the soundtrack to Burton's comedic '70s-set vampire tale based off a 1960s ABC soap opera about a family tormented by strange supernatural occurrences.

While "The Avengers" is preparing for a mega opening if early tracking is any indication, its run at the top of the box office might be a brief one as just a week later, Warner Bros. is dropping the latest Tim Burton and Johnny Depp team-up "Dark Shadows" and they are pushing their flick just as hard as Marvel.

The summer movie season is only a few weeks away. Indeed, in some parts of the world, it's already underway. Due to the Euro 2012 football tournament, the rest of the world are getting several films, including "The Avengers" and "Prometheus" early, and many territories were unlucky enough to get "Battleship" in their multiplexes last week. But things kick off in the U.S. on May 4th with "The Avengers," with roughly one massive tentpole following every week after that.

How could a movie based around a cult TV show that no one really remembers all that fondly be turned into a summer blockbuster hit? Well, for one you pair up Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, and then you (finally) release a trailer that is not only pretty rock solid, but seems to finds the top talents comfortably in their wheelhouse. Is it still a bit too quirky and strange? You might think so, but even the competition knows better, and it was earlier this week Paramount decided to get out of the way, moving "The Dictator" back five days from May 11th, having it open the following Wednesday on May 16th, effectively ending what would've been one of the summer's biggest showdowns at the box office. So with all that preamble out of the way, let's get to the movie, shall we?

This past weekend, two pricey fantasy epics hit movie screens in the form of Warner Bros.' swords-and-sandal sequel "Wrath Of The Titans" and Relativity's comic fairy tale "Mirror Mirror." And while their audiences were, in theory, different (with Tarsem's Snow White picture skewing much younger), neither fared as well as hoped, "Wrath of the Titans" ending up with barely half of the original film's opening weekend, around $35 million, while "Mirror Mirror" failed to clear the $20 million mark, despite the presence of Julia Roberts.
