There's a job vacancy going at 20th Century Fox. And one that needs to be filled pretty urgently. Late last night, it was announced that David Slade, director of "Hard Candy," "30 Days Of Night and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," who'd won the job of helming a reboot of Marvel superhero "Daredevil" for the studio, had left the project, citing a commitment to the pilot of NBC series "Hannibal." Directors leave projects all the time, but what makes this a bit of a problem for Fox is that the clock is ticking on their option on the character, and if a film isn't before cameras before the end of the year, the rights are likely to revert back to Marvel, cutting off a potential cash cow. And so a new director is needed, and needed fast.

A found footage cop movie? OK, not quite, but David Ayer's "End of Watch," starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as two cops in the LAPD, definitely has that visceral, super intimate, shot on digital-cameras look to it. Or as Ayer once described it: an "in your face” POV style, and that's definitely the case.

First announced a couple of months ago, many hoped Universal's attempt to reboot their "Scarface" franchise would fall to the wayside, but it seems they are quite serious about not only making it happen, but getting it ready sooner than we thought. Following in the footsteps of Oliver Stone, Ben Hecht and Howard Hawks is...David Ayer. Deadline reports he's been tasked with writing the screenplay for the upcoming film.

There's nothing wrong with having a niche, as long as you're good at what you do, and it's fair to say that David Ayer has found his. The ex-navy submariner broke through with the script for the WW2 actioner "U-571" (as well as another, autobiographical submarine-themed script, "Squids," which David Fincher was considering making a decade ago), but ever since then, he's planted his flag firmly in the cop drama camp.
