If there was any justice in this world, some generous benefactor would drop some cash to air David Lynch's ad during the Super Bowl if only to freak America out. If anything it will certainly be more memorable than the halftime show. But alas, that won't happen, so you'll just have to enjoy it as is.

It's amazing how time flies. It was in January that David Lynch first tipped off that a treasure trove of deleted scenes and lost footage from his classic 1986 psycho-drama "Blue Velvet" had been unearthed. And as the Guardian details, these scenes may have been lost forever were it not for the persistence of an MGM staffer who kept up a search for the footage.

So, what has David Lynch been up to since "Inland Empire"? Well, doing everything but making another movie. Oh sure, he might have a new film in the works, and there's that transcendental meditation documentary knocking around, but he's otherwise been doing ads for fashion labels, directing concert webcasts, making short films like the piece he recently put together for Viennale Fest ‘11, and oh yeah, he recorded his first album which comes out next month.

Granted, it's pretty thin gruel but we'll take what we can get from David Lynch who hasn't made a film since 2006's "Inland Empire" and has lately embarked on an ill-advised music career.

In a recent interview, moviemaker Abel Ferrara, discussing the current state of cinema said, “My kind of filmmakers don’t really exist [anymore]...[David] Lynch doesn’t even want to make films anymore. I’ve talked to him about it, OK? I can tell when he talks about it. I’m a lunatic, and he’s pushing transcendental meditation." And certainly, that seems to bear out. It has been five years since Lynch dropped the middling "Inland Empire" and since then he's done anything but direct a movie, instead taking on webcasts, nightclub openings and fashion ad campaigns (though last year there was a half-hearted crowdsourcing attempt to fund a documentary about himself). For better or worse, music seems to be Lynch's new muse (his website is titled David Lynch Music Company in case you need a further tipoff as to his focus these days) and the director is now set to drop his debut album.

If you generally like depraved movies and you love temperamental and mercurial curmudgeons, it's pretty much mandatory that you adore Bronx-born filmmaker Abel Ferrara. Maybe you don't think all his films are successful ("Dangerous Game", "Body Snatchers"), maybe you think some of them are near Big Apple sleaze-masterpieces ("King of New York," "Bad Lieutenant") and very possibly you haven't seen the ones that have had trouble finding proper distribution ("Mary," "Go Go Tales," "Chelsea On The Rocks"), but in theory, you love his no holds barred approach, his refusal to sugarcoat anything in an interview, and his general cantankerous mien. This is the dude who wasn't afraid to go toe-to-toe with the much-beloved Werner Herzog for recontextualizing "The Bad Lieutenant" after all and there's something to be said for that.

In case you've missed it, there has been a minor storm of controversy brewing over Warner Bros.' recent release of Stanley Kubrick's masterful "Barry Lyndon" on BluRay. The bone of contention is that the current release crops the picture with a 1.77 aspect ratio, which Warner Bros. insists complies with the wishes of the late Kubrick. However, Glenn Kenny has unearthed the smoking gun as it were, receiving a copy of the instructions Stanley Kubrick sent to projectionists insisting on a screen format of 1.66 "and in no event at less than 1:75." Meanwhile, Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere has also been furiously digging into this whole aspect ratio conundrum, and got a lengthy response from Leon Vitali, Kubrick's friend, assistant and expert on all things regarding his films and...you should just read it for yourself.
