5 Things We'd Rather See David Lynch Do Than Open His 'Mulholland Drive' Club in Paris

You may have already heard the news: David Lynch is opening a nightclub in Paris. Yes, you read that correctly. The acclaimed director of "The Elephant Man" is to open an entertainment venue in one of Europe's cultural capitals. To sweeten and/or poison the deal, depending on your outlook, it's taking as its design premise Lynch's 2001 masterwork "Mulholland Drive" and the film's own night club, Club Silencio. For those who haven't seen the film in a while and need reminding, Club Silencio is the other-worldly mystical dive joint in which wide-eyed Hollywood starlet Betty Elms (Naomi Watts) finally leaves her self-declared comfortable "dream place" and awakens as the suicidal Diane Selwyn (also Naomi Watts) in a monstrous version of reality. This real-life iteration promises "a movie theater, concert hall, art gallery, restaurant and, of course, a bar" but there's no word yet on whether the establishment will stick with the film's continuity and have Rebakah del Rio doing the nightly floor-show where she collapses onstage in a death-trance, a whack-job in a blue powder wig who ominously mutters the club's title and a mustachioed emcee called Cookie who also runs a hotel downtown. Whatever the case, all of this is pretty dispiriting news for those of us still waiting for Lynch to announce another film project.

So it appears David Lynch is paying more attention to music these days than movies. He recently made a pretty tepid foray into electronic music and also directed a Duran Duran concert webcast last month (did anyone watch it?). And it looks like he's been working with New York City rockers Interpol lately too.

There's always something baffling about David Lynch. Even his more straight-laced stuff has certain oddities to them, such as "The Straight Story" (general handling of throwaway lines/moments) or his thoughts on his coffee ("I like cheese as well"/"Eric, here's not here… he's in an airplane, but anyway…"), but his newest project with Duran Duran seems to be devoid of his signature touch.

While it's coming on five years since "Inland Empire" with no word yet of another feature, it's not like David Lynch hasn't been keeping busy. He's been selling coffee, doing weather reports, shooting a campaign for Lady Dior with Marion Cotillard and releasing music (more on that in a second), but his next project is a bit of an eyebrow raiser.

Lists are subjective. That's the joy of them, to some degree -- you get to see the tastes of others, and hopefully pick up a few tips for things you may have overlooked. And you're never going to find a list that you agree with 100%, particularly when the stakes are bigger -- lists of 'greatest films' or 'greatest directors' are a veritable minefield of disputes and feuds. But that doesn't change the fact that some lists are just dumb.

Aching to take a trip down memory lane? Feeling nostalgic to revisit the great Frank Booth (the iconic Dennis Hopper) now that he has passed on to the other side? If this sounds appealing all of a sudden, hold a beat.

So when he's not making movies, selling coffee or giving weather reports, David Lynch likes to make music. He's contributed bits and pieces to the scores for "Wild at Heart," "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me" and "Mulholland Drive," penned a couple of decent songs for "Inland Empire" and even dropped a straight up rock record (well, as "straight up" as Lynch gets) called BlueBob. However, his latest release is an electronic/"modern blues" single entitled "Good Day Today." And it's not very good.
