David Mackenzie, Starred Up
One of the highlights of the Göteborg International Film Festival, and indeed one of the highlights of our year so far, was catching up with David Mackenzie’s “Starred Up," which, if you missed our review first time out, you can read all about here. The unflinching but brutally human prison drama is based on a script by first-timer Jonathan Asser, a writer and poet by whose experiences inspired the film and the character of Oliver, the posh but dedicated volunteer inmate counselor.

Can Ewan McGregor string together strong back-to-back performances after Mike Mills' "Beginners"? Can he match the heartfelt chemistry he shared with Melanie Laurent in Mills' film with another much-loved Gallic thespian in Eva Green? And will David MacKenzie's fusion of a love story and a disaster pic work at all? All questions we're currently asking of "Perfect Sense," the latest effort from the Scottish helmer who broke out with another McGregor-starrer "Young Adam" back in 2003.

Review: David Mackenzie's Music Festival Rom-Com 'You Instead' Has A Tin Ear

Not many films are set at music festivals. D.A. Pennebaker’s documentary, “Monterey Pop” is vital, we’ll grant you, and other rock docs that expose something fundamental about the artists they’re profiling (“Don’t Look Back,” “Gimme Shelter”) remain compelling portraits of some of the most important artists of the twentieth-century. But, much like stand-up comedy or running for high office, fictional recreations of what compels a human being to get up onstage in front of thousands of people and expose themselves to the public at large, are far and few between.

David Mackenzie's an interesting sort of director. Ever since his debut a decade ago or so with the British indie "The Last Great Wilderness," he's created a series of solid, consistently interesting dramas, none of which are bad (though "Spread" comes close), but none of which are truly excellent either (the underrated "Hallam Foe" is the next best thing, however). But he's always had interesting taste, been able to get strong performances out of his casts, and marched to the beat of his own drum, and we've always believed that he'd knock something out of the park one of these days.

Well, believe it or not, the film is in the can getting ready to unspool and we now have the first official look at leads Luke Treadaway and Natalia Tena ('Harry Potter' franchise).

Meet Susan. An epidemiologist who thinks all men are assholes. Now meet Michael, a sweetheart of a chef who sweeps Susan off her feet. Sounds like the beginnings of a romcom right? Not so.
