Hey may not have been nominated for any Oscars, but stuntman turned filmmaker David R. Ellis had more modest goals. His filmography suggests a director that was aiming for mainstream kudos despite what the critical world might have to say, but unfortunately, his career behind the camera was cut short. He has unexpectedly passed away at the age of 60.

Hot on the heels of his colorful appearance on "Saturday Night Live" over the weekend, and the rumors that elements of Nick Fury’s solo-movie might have been folded into “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” comes word from the Anime News Network (via Movies.com) that Samuel L. Jackson has joined the cast of the English-language live-action remake of Yasuomi Umetsu’s 1988 anime film “Kite.”

Well, by all accounts, including ours, "Shark Night 3D" is awful but honestly, what did you expect from the guy who kickstarted his career directing "Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Francisco" and went on to make such classics as "Cellular," "Final Destination 2" and "Snakes On A Plane." If "Shark Night 3D" proved anything, the director can deliver a thriller or horror movie with a PG-13 rating on a budget. So we presume those are the reasons he landed this gig which will find him de-fanging a controversial anime film.

Titles are tricky things, as anyone who's ever tried to write, make or market a movie will tell you. Want to know one of the (many) reasons that James L. Brooks' "How Do You Know" became a flop of near-legendary proportions? Well, the fact that no one could remember what the damn thing was called certainly didn't help. At the same time, the right level of on-the-nose titling can make a film an instant cult hit, and internet meme; think "Hot Tub Time Machine" and "Snakes On A Plane."

This Movie Will Probably Be Terrible In Every DimensionEvery time 3D is used as a novelty (though, wouldn't that be every time?) James Cameron cries. And he might be crying a lot next year. "Piranha 3DD" (yes, that's the title), the sequel to the summer's modest box office hit "Piranha 3D," is already gearing up to get in front of cameras with an eye for an August 2011 release. And now, another water-bound 3D thriller (trend alert?) is on the way.
