'All Is Lost' Director J.C Chandor Sets Up 'A Most Violent Year,' Star Robert Redford To Helm 3D Doc For Wim Wenders

Before J.C. Chandor could fully soak in the experience of premiering his sophomore feature “All is Lost” at Cannes this week -- which was met with rapturous praise (read our review here) -- he had already lined up his next project, and it's slated to shoot later this year. His third feature, A Most Violent Year,” is planning to cast a bunch of big names, but none of them have been revealed as of yet. Given the buzz for 'Lost,' however, names may not be so difficult to come by. Plot details are being kept under wraps but considering how well he handled an ensemble cast with his debut film, “Margin Call,” it should be fun to see him working with another top notch cast. Studios continue to hunt the great white whale of the young adult franchise. With "Twilight" over, "The Hunger Games" is the only player in town, but 2013 brings two contenders to the fore: "Beautiful Creatures" which we're only watching because of Emmy Rossum and "The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones" whose title we don't understand. "Divergent" with Shailene Woodley will get in front of cameras later this year, and now Disney is eager to get into the ring.

"Hard Candy" director David Slade isn't wasting any time now that 20th Century Fox's reboot of "Daredevil" is off his plate. He's evidently Disney's first choice to direct an adaptation of "Matched," a young adult novel and love story set in the future, written by Ally Condie. Of course, since it's a young adult novel and set in the future, like "The Hunger Games," "Matched" is the opening part of a trilogy that contains the second book, "Crossed," and a third as-of-yet untitled final book that is due November 2012. Can you say: franchise!

Comic-Con officially begins today, but Fox, who've been a frequent presence at the event in past years (including stealing the show in 2011 with the first footage from "Prometheus"), are more or less absent, other than a separate panel for their 2013 summer hope "After Earth." More than anything else, it's simply because they don't have anything relevant to show; the long-delayed "The Wolverine" is only getting underway in the next few weeks, and "X-Men: First Class 2" won't shoot until early next year.

Le sigh...George Orwell once wrote, "journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed: everything else is public relations," which means 99% of what we do is the latter (we're not fooling ourselves). But lord, this 2+2=7, "Daredevil" story is a bit sad even for our crazy world of would-be, very wishful thinking.

Well, with that "Daredevil" movie he signed up to direct last year still in need of a finished script (Marvel recently hired David James Kelly to take a crack at it), David Slade is going to go off and make something in the meantime, and it sounds like something a little more "Hard Candy" and less "30 Days Of Night."

If at first you do not mega-succeed, try, try again. This is of course the studio motto and it's changing whether you bomb or not; see the post-Nolan "Batman" films that will eventually happen and the upcoming "Amazing Spider-Man" reboot series. But in the meantime, many studios are concentrating on their failures. Sony just re-tried (and failed) with the "Ghost Rider" series, 20th Century Fox is attempting to get the "Fantastic Four" series back on track, Marvel might try "The Hulk" again (third time's the charm), and Fox once again is also hoping to start their "Daredevil" series over again (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, and director Mark Steven Johnson buried the first one in the ground rather quickly; hey, at least the stars got a family out ot it).

David Slade's last move was "Twilight: Eclipse" but he seems to have run into a few stumbling blocks getting his next film mounted. He had lined up the vampire horror flick "The Last Voyage Of Demeter" but potential star Noomi Rapace cast doubt on the project in the spring over her involvement and not much has been heard about it since. The most high profile gig Slade landed was taking on the reboot of "Daredevil" but that too seems to be in a weird limbo, with no other updates at all since it was first announced. He was also in the mix for "The Wolverine" but we all know how that turned out. Now it looks like he's got an interesting new project coming his way, but too bad it sounds almost exactly like "Drive."
