Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
So, what can you expect from "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes"? We'll let director Matt Reeves explain. "We've got apes on horses," he told USA Today. "There is a sense in the beginning of the movie that apes have inherited the Earth. You see the species as it takes dominion over the planet. It's an ape-world. That's the fun of it."

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
There are two approaches to tentpole marketing. On one side, you have folks like Sony and Marvel, who like to give everyone everything so that before the movie even opens, you feel like you've seen it already. And on other side, carefully plotted campaigns give you just enough to get excited, but save the spectacle for the multiplex. We prefer the latter and hopefully Fox sticks with it for "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" (though their track records suggests otherwise).

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
We'll be the first to admit that prior to "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" we were basically expecting something along the lines of this. But Rupert Wyatt defied expectations, and the rather limp marketing campaign, and delivered one of the most satisfying summer movies in years. His effort was lean, smart and a riff on an existing franchise that felt fresh, without ever being too self-serious. In short, it was a success. But can Matt Reeves—who also worked the impossible with his excellent "Let Me In," a remake of the already solid "Let The Right One In"—pick up the ball and run with it? We're about to find out.

Now that speculation seems to have been quashed over whether Michael Giacchino would inherit John Williams’ spot on J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars” gig, the question then turned to where the “Star Trek Into Darkness” composer would land next, besides the Wachowskis’ “Jupiter Ascending.” But in record time, Giacchino has continued to prove himself one of the most sought-after in the business, and attached himself to another successful sci-fi franchise.

Such is movie marketing these days that it begins even before cameras roll, with studios and filmmakers teasing everything from casting decisions to location photos to fan the flames of excitement early. For two big tentpole sequels coming in 2014, they are following that playbook in the hopes of a big payoff.

While we were troubled by Rupert Wyatt's exit and the apparent reasons behind it -- a rushed schedule in order to make a pre-ordained release date -- 20th Century Fox seem to have been going out of their way to make us feel good about "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," the follow-up to the surprisingly excellent 2011 blockbuster "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." First they had a script draft by "Side Effects" scribe Scott Z. Burns, then replaced Wyatt with "Let Me In," director Matt Reeves. Then Reeves cast his film up, and alongside the returning Andy Serkis, landed Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

So, Keri Russell is kind of having a moment, isn't she? While "Dark Skies" didn't exactly rain success on the box office, she's the center of one of the big buys of the Sundance Film Festival, the high concept rom-com "Austenland" and then there's that little show called "The Americans" which seems to be picking up fans left and right. And now, the actress is powering up into her first non-J.J. Abrams-related blockbuster.
