"Deadfall" starts off strong enough – three criminals, led by Addison (Eric Bana) and his sexy sister Liza (Olivia Wilde) speed away from some unspecified job (it's later revealed to be a casino heist). It's icy out and their driver (the only black character in the whole movie) overcompensates, avoiding a deer, which sends their vehicle cartwheeling over a snowy embankment. As Addison and Liza climb out of the wrecked car they notice their very-dead driver, his head through the windshield. "He should have been wearing his safety belt," Bana grumbles, dripping a syrupy Southern accent on top of his natural Australian drawl.

As we head into the tail end of September, summer light is fading and the temperature is beginning to dip. And as we'll soon be pulling jackets out of the closet and putting flip flops away until year, one movie is coming along that embraces the wintry season to tell a taut little tale.

No one in the past few years has quite so committed to on-the-lam thrillers like Eric Bana. From “Hulk” to “Hanna,” the Australian actor seems to revel in the pulpy elements inherent to the films, and as the recently released trailer shows for his latest, “Deadfall,” he's brought two veteran actors and a Southern accent out for a dose of genre fun.

There is no one who would disagree with the notion that the age of great film posters is long behind us -- instead we are left with orange-blue monstrosities with floating heads. That’s not to say there isn’t an inspired choice every now and then, as is the case with the first official poster for the horror anthology film “V/H/S” that scared audiences at Sundance earlier this year (read our take here). The poster wouldn’t look out of place as the cover of a schlocky video at a local video store circa the late '80s. The anthology, which has segments directed by a who’s-who of indie horror including Ti West (“The House Of The Devil” and “The Innkeepers”), Joe Swanberg (“Silver Bullets”) and David Bruckner (“The Signal”), will hit VOD on August 31st before debuting in theaters a few weeks later in October. And if you find yourself in North Texas this weekend, you’ll be able to catch the film on the big screen at the inaugural Oak Cliff Film Festival.
