Transformers: Age of Extinction
Uh oh, the box office is down about 45% from last year’s July 4th weekend. The sky is falling! OK, maybe not so much, but a malaise has certainly kicked in with audiences that aren’t connecting with films in a major way. This time last year, the July 4th weekend sold $220 million worth of tickets (a 12% increase from 2012). It did so on the backs of “Despicable Me 2” and even the flop of the “Lone Ranger” (which couldn’t crack $30 million in its opening weekend). Fast forward to 2014 and it’s not looking hot in comparison at all. Why that is? Well, despite all those that actually love Michael Bay/love to hate-watch Michael Bay, “Transformers: Age of Extinction” fell a rather substantial 64% in its second week.

Deliver Us From Evil
The opening fifteen to twenty minutes of “Deliver Us From Evil” find co-writer and director Scott Derrickson delivering a pretty clear statement of intent. Within that span of time, soldiers in Iraq stumble across an unspeakable horror, a street weary detective finds a dead baby in a dumpster, and not long after, that same cop finds himself in the lion’s den at the zoo, with his gun drawn on two of the approaching big cats. There is nothing particularly subtle about Derrickson’s second time around exorcism genre, following 2005’s “The Exorcism Of Emily Rose,” and that’s part of the problem with this Jerry Bruckheimer produced exercise in horror (surprise, surprise).

Deliver Us From Evil
The horror genre is continually trying to find new ways to scare audiences, and often that means twisting conventions into new shapes. So the idea of a fright flick in the guise of a cop movie is at least a pretty interesting one, even if the result still kinda looks like your usual exorcism/demon/creature movie.

Deliver Us From Evil
Here's a fun fact: Eric Bana made his name as a comedian in Australia before transitioning to the dramatic actor the rest of the world knows him as. You can thank Andrew Dominik's foresight to cast in him "Chopper" for that. And having proven his chops when it comes to moving the heart, Bana is now gonna try and scare the shit out of you with the upcoming "Deliver Us From Evil."

Ciarán Hinds, Eric Bana, Closed Circuit
Now is a very good time for "Closed Circuit," a movie about the British judicial system and the proliferation of CCTV around London, to be released. With the firestorm of controversy surround illegal surveillance, Edward Snowden and PRISM, and the general feeling of unease knowing that there is a pretty good chance that the email you sent to your college roommate is being intercepted and reviewed by some higher power, it's an ideal moment for a claustrophobic, conspiratorial thriller like "Closed Circuit." Few thrillers tap into the zeitgeist like this film does. In the film, Eric Bana plays Martin Rose, a public-court lawyer assigned to defending a Turkish national who seems to have played a role in a deadly London bombing. As his investigation continues and he navigates Britain's controversial closed court system, he's drawn into a shadowy, conspiracy-laced world and reignites an old flame with his "special advocate" lawyer.

It's not really a surprise that Eric Roberts has signed to star in the horror sequel no one cares about (do they?) "The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence)." After all, this is the guy who makes a movie more frequently than people take showers (seriously, look at his IMDb page) and has no quality barometer at all.

Despite the apex of the genre occurring forty years ago, the past few years has seen an increase in exorcism films: “The Rite,” “The Devil Inside,” and two at-bats for “The Last Exorcism” among others. And in case you forgot, last fall it was reported that “Sinister” director Scott Derrickson was heading back to the exorcism well (he wrote and directed 2005’s “The Exorcism Of Emily Rose”) with “Beware The Night” and he’s lined up a nifty cast to join Eric Bana.

It’s been a little over a month since the U.S. release of the modestly successful Ethan Hawke-starring horror film “Sinister,” but helmer Scott Derrickson has already lined up a follow-up, with the ever-solid Eric Bana in talks to lead.
