Draft Day
There have been countless movies made about football, but there has never been a movie made about the NFL Draft–that magical day when sports franchises from around the country vie for the hottest college players in an intense, all-day affair that combines the showmanship of a Vegas show (complete with costumed players walking onto a brightly lit stage) and the number-crunching intensity of a last minute tax audit. Thankfully, the new Ivan Reitman movie “Draft Day,” starring Kevin Costner as a high strung general manager of the Cleveland Browns, repositions this mixture of pageantry politicking as a thrilling analytic free-for-all; it’s “Moneyball” as directed like an episode of “24.”

Draft Day
These clips don’t tell us if Sonny decides to keep or drop Bo, but the one with Frank Langella does give us a taste for Ivan Reitman’s directing. The scene has a trippy, moving split-screen that frequently overlaps Langella onto Costner’s side, adding some energy to this tale of a football manager who is making plays in an attempt to land the number one draft pick.

Draft Day
If there's a running theme in Kevin Costner's films for 2014, it's recruitment. In "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," the title says it all with Costner enlisting Chris Pine for some covert action, then in "3 Days To Kill" the actor himself is hired to kick some ass, Euro style. And then later on the spring, Costner will head downfield for "Draft Day" where the thrill of the titular event will be turned cinematic.

We're likely reaching something of a tipping point with the superhero movies. The first wave is ending: "X-Men" has already been reinvented, Superman is getting his second relaunch in a decade, "The Hulk" has already had its third iteration, and Christopher Nolan's Batman-trilogy, which more than anything else brought a new level of respectability to the genre, is coming to a close. We're entering the second phase of the modern superhero movie era, and it's leading to some interesting possibilities. So far, these films have essentially been a genre in and of themselves, but as new filmmakers inevitably try out fresh ideas within its confines, we're likely to see other styles brought into the mix.

WonderCon was this weekend, and as you might have noted, all eyes were on "Prometheus," with Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic debuting about nineteen different trailers over the course of the weekend, leading the other big comic book movies that were at the fair to fight for scraps of attention. Among them: "The Amazing Spider-Man," Marc Webb's reboot of Sony's key Marvel superhero franchise.

Perhaps someone is a fan of FX's "Rescue Me" show? This writer hasn't seen it, but we hear it's rather engrossing. Anyhow, the show's creator and star Denis Leary has joined the cast of Marc Webb's 3D reboot of "Spider-Man."
