On The Rise, Directors, 2014
After looking at musicians, cinematographers, actors, actresses and screenwriters, there was only one natural place to go with our On The Rise series: directors. After all, film is still an auteur's medium, and the director is the one who hires all of the above, stitching together the various elements to create a final product that only they could have made.

Because we're usually far too busy for the partying and snowboarding, the highlights of the Sundance Film Festival are, of course, the movies themselves. But almost as pleasurable as the films, is discovering new voices and talent, and seeing for the first time the performers and filmmakers whose careers will grow and rise long after the locals have reclaimed Park City for another year.

Appropriate Behavior
The feature debut of Desiree Akhavan, “Appropriate Behavior,” opens with the writer/director/star casually carrying a strap-on dildo down a Brooklyn street. Therein lies both the irony that makes the title so humorous and the thesis statement of her film: Akhavan is going to take her sexuality and walk it down the street for all to see—but in a cool, funny, casual way, with a healthy dose of irreverent self-awareness. Akhavan stars as Shirin, a bisexual Brooklynite going through a devastating breakup with her girlfriend Maxine. She’s also underemployed and almost magnetically drawn to the ridiculous situations that make living in a big city both exciting and ludicrous. To top it off, Shirin has the added challenge of living up to the expectations of her very particular Iranian-American family.

Appropriate Behavior
One of the filmmakers making their debut at Sundance this January is Desiree Akhavan, a New York writer/director/actor who pulls triple duty in her feature film, “Appropriate Behavior.” Chronicling the romantic (and otherwise) misadventures of Shireen, a bisexual Iranian-American Brooklyn twentysomething in the wake of a devastating breakup, “Appropriate Behavior” is a funny and poignant look at this world through the eyes of a very specific perspective. We chatted with Akhavan before Sundance kicks off, and also have an exclusive clip from the film to check out before its debut.
