Casting: Neil LaBute Enlists Ethan Hawke, Vera Farmiga For New Thriller; Logan Lerman Joins Brad Pitt For ‘Fury’

Logan Lerman might be known for the forgettable “Percy Jackson” films (a sequel arrives this summer), but he almost scored the coveted lead in “The Amazing Spider-Man” a few years ago and he impressed with his acting chops in “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower.” Casting directors and filmmakers have noticed. He’s getting called up into the big leagues and will join Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf in the WWII tank thriller “Fury” that “End of Watch” filmmaker David Ayer is writing and directing for Sony Pictures. The movie is already set for a Fall 2014 release and it’s an interesting one because it will be Ayer’s first non police-centered movie. Let’s hope unlike the almost great “End Of Watch,” the visual material doesn’t stand in the way of a good story and strong dynamic.

Here's an honest question: when you put song by Eminem that's over a decade old in the trailer for a kids movie, who exactly are you trying to appeal to? Parents, who have a suddenly nostalgia for Slim Shady? It certainly can't be kids who probably have no idea who or what a Marshall Mathers is. More importantly, their parents wouldn't likely let them listen to the rapper in the first place. Anyway, long story short, the new trailer for "Despicable Me 2" has arrived, and outside the bizarre soundtrack choice, it's not too bad.

And they are keeping those yellow creatures -- arguably, the key to the success of the whole thing -- right up front and center.

Pretty soon, the Minions are going to be everywhere. The weird little goggle-wearing, pill-shaped, yellow henchmen of super-villain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) in 2010's surprise smash "Despicable Me," who speak in a bizarre made-up language and were, largely, the best part of that movie, are about to get their own spin-off. Deadline is reporting that Universal and Chris Meledandri's Illumination will make "The Minions" their fifth collaboration, opening in the summer of 2014.

In the near future, the actress will feature in Curtis Hanson's surfing drama "Of Men And Mavericks," appear in the upcoming 'Oz The Great And Powerful," and will star in and co-produce (with James Franco) the drama "Wrong Number."

At this point, it's easier to name the actors who haven't lent their voices to a big CGI animated film than it is to name the ones who have. Ever since Robin Williams played the genie in "Aladdin" back in 1992, stars have been a key part of bringing audiences into big-screen cartoons, while Pixar have given rare lead roles to character actors like Craig T Nelson and Patton Oswalt in their admirable policy of going with the right person for the voice first, and a name second. As such, there's only a few holdouts, A-list or otherwise, to hit the recording booth, and their ranks just got a little smaller, as a man who's been a star for forty years is about to make his animation debut.

While the trailers leading up to the release of Universal's 2010 CGI fest "Despicable Me" felt far more cryptic than they should have for a kid's animated movie featuring historical monuments being stolen by an unknown evil genius, the film turned out to be a surprise hit for the studio that summer and seemingly won over critics with its brand of offbeat humor. Not surprisingly, sequel talks were underway almost immediately with cast members like Steve Carell and Jason Segel set to rejoin, and now "Despicable Me 2" looks to be adding some Oscar-winning prestige to the ensemble.
