2013: Worst Fillms Of The Year
You know us, dear reader, we’re on the side of the angels. Most days of the year will find us, Pollyanna-like, looking on the bright side of the movie world, championing the weak, giving succour to the neglected and finding the silver lining to every cinematic cloud. But not today. Today, screw that, we’re giving vent to the bile that has built up over a twelvemonth of diligent moviegoing and letting it rip on those movies that just fucking suck. And while we still believe in reasoned argument and persuasive rhetoric to get our points across, forgive us if we occasionally lapse into hyperbole here, and remember that these are films that take two-odd hours of our (and your) lives and brainspace, that could be given to something much more deserving,, rewarding and wondrous, and serve us mulch instead. I mean, Bergman’s “Autumn Sonata” is roughly the same length as Sandler’s “Grown Ups 2.”

Review: 'Diana' Biopic Starring Naomi Watts Not Worthy Of A Crown

From the use of Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" (twice) to choice morsels of quotes such as, "Wherever you are, death will find you, even if you hide yourselves in firmly constructed towers" (from the Koran), the specter of death haunts "Diana." While that's not a surprise, given that the story tracks her life in the two years leading up (and including) her passing, it's just one of many elements the script by Stephen Jeffreys ("The Libertine") isn't quite sure how to handle. Set against a chronicle of Princess Diana's last and most meaningful relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, it's a fine balance between tragedy and ghoulishness, and sadly, the film never finds it. Graceless, clumsy and uncertain, "Diana" is the result of what happens in trying to honor the late Princess by engaging in the very tabloid speculation that marred her life.

While her pal Nicole Kidman is out of the way as potential competition during this awards season, it's still far from a slam dunk for Naomi Watts to be in the mix of contenders. Early word on the forthcoming "Diana" has not been good, being described as "car crash cinema," "terrible and tacky" and "a right royal mess" in early reviews, but the picture will soldier on, hoping that once it goes a bit wider, there will be some champions for the film.

While celebrities may always bemoan the lack of privacy, none of them have lived with the kind of scrutiny that faced Diana, Princess Of Wales. A marriage into the royal family turned into a lifetime in the tabloids, with a tragic ending that set the world mourning, and paparazzi on pause... for a few days anyway. And now the story of her last great love is hitting the big screen in what could be an awards season contender.
