The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
A few years ago, Hollywood was all about board games, but with the disaster that was Peter Berg’s “Battleship” and the one-two punch that was “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games,” studios have now pinned their hopes on the YA-market. This morning sees two new images, one from an already successful franchise and the other from one of the many hopefuls looking to hit big.

"Twilight" is done, "The Hunger Games" is already a phenomenon and Hollywood is eager to wring more dollars out of tween wallets, but those plans haven't quite worked out. "Beautiful Creatures" and "The Host" both fizzled and no one is really expecting "Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones" to be a blockbuster. But can "Divergent" succeed where others have failed?

If we were betting men, and asked to put money on what could be the latest young adult novel series to follow "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games" into becoming a cinematic phenomenon, we'd feel relatively safe putting our money on "Divergent." The book, the first in a trilogy by author Veronica Roth, is one of the bigger-selling books on that world in a while, and "Twilight" backers Summit snapped the film rights up a while ago.

While Jeremy Irvine, Lucas Till and Alex Pettyfer were testing for the coveted (?) male lead in "Divergent," and certainly have more name recognition than the eventual winner, it seems their talents didn't quite match what the filmmakers were looking for. Instead, rising Brit actor Theo James has gotten the gig, in what he likely hopes will be a push into the stateside scene.

From rumbling with Tom Cruise in "Jack Reacher" to trading quips with Dad Willis in "A Good Day To Die Hard," Jai Courtney has been enjoying blockbuster gigs, but still hasn't penetrated the pop culture consciousness. Perhaps a part in potential tween franchise will do the trick.

While she did star in the then-biggest movie of all time, in "Titanic," Kate Winslet has, before and since, stayed away from franchise territory. The closest she's ever come to a tentpole was probably Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion," or maybe the Aardman animation "Flushed Away," but in general, she's preferred to stick to artsier, more awards-baity fare, working with directors like Roman Polanski, Todd Haynes and, on the way, Jason Reitman.

So, will any of these guys be the next Robert Pattinson? As studios gear up to fill the space left by the now finished "Twilight" franchise -- "Beautiful Creatures" from Warner Bros. arrives next month and Sony's "The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones" hits in the summer -- another contender is on the way, but from the studio who brought you Edward and Bella in the first place. Summit is gearing up "Divergent" with Shailene Woodley, and it's time to find her a co-star.

Farewell, "Twilight." After four years, and five movies, there are (until the inevitable reboot/spin-off/extra sequel) no longer any movies in the super-popular Stephenie Meyer-penned vampire franchise to look forward to/dread. The final movie, "Breaking Dawn Pt. 2" (our review here) is in theaters, doing the usual blockbuster numbers, but for the near future at least, that's it.

With "Twilight" wrapping up its final installment this week, there's clearly a certain amount of jostling to be the next big young adult franchise going on. "The Hunger Games" certainly has the early lead, but that franchise is already eyeing its 2015 endgame by hiring Francis Lawrence to direct the two-part finale, 'Mockingjay,' so the field is still fairly open. And there's plenty on the way, with two of the contenders starting to show their wares or shape up their casts.

There is no doubt stardom is coming for Shailene Woodley. After breaking out in last year's "The Descendants," she has lined up two indies with acclaimed filmmakers Gregg Araki and James Ponsoldt ("Smashed"), and just over a week ago, it was revealed she was in talks to play Mary Jane Watson in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." But could a young adult franchise be her ticket to bigger things, launching her career the way it has for Kristen Stewart ("Twilight") and Jennifer Lawrence ("The Hunger Games")?
